  Description

  Situated on the NE slope of a gently rising but prominent ridge, now surrounded by coniferous plantation as shown on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Lough Garr now drained and survives as a bog 250m to SW with River Riffey and bogland 450m to NE. Earthwork (WM006-028----) 380m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a sub-rectangular shaped enclosure or earthwork (approx. diam. 30m NE-SW; 15m NW-SE dim). The earthwork has been levelled and is now visible only as a dark band of vegetation (Wth 6m). A gap (Wth 2m) in this crop mark at ESE may represent the location of an entrance.   Description

  Annotated on the OS Fair Plan as ‘fort’, and depicted as a sub-rectangular field on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, it has been partially levelled since then. This appears to have been a small field. • WM006-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on low lying pasture-land, 120m E of a stream which is a tributary of the Inny River. Bog 90m to N and 130m to W. Ringfort (WM006-047----) 140m to SE. A sub-circular area (approx. diam. 31m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank which has been levelled from W-N, and a wide shallow fosse (Wth 5m). The interior slopes slightly from NW-SE with traces of cultivation ridges running across the monument. A series of banks and depressions in the vicinity appear to be drainage features.   Description

  Situated on a low rise in pasture-land in gently undulating pasture-land. Bog 250m to W. Ringfort (WM006-029----) 400m to NW. Slightly raised circular area (approx. diam. 37m N-S; 39m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank, best preserved from S-W-NNW, and external fosse. Possible entrance gap at E. The raised interior slopes slightly from N-S, with traces of cultivation ridges visible. A standing stone (WM006-047001-) is visible in the SW quadrant of the interior. • WM006-047001 Standing stone
  Description

  Situated on a low rise in gently undulating pasture-land. Bog 250m to W. Ringfort (WM006-029----) 400m to NW. Tall slender limestone standing stone (approx. H 2.1m) in SW quadrant of ringfort (WM006-043---). Rectangular in plan and tapering towards the top with some spalling and splitting of the surface due to weathering. The stone has been reused as a scratching post. Vague traces of two concentric slightly grooved or pecked circles on E face. Socket stones visible at base. • WM006-071 Burial
  Description

  In May 1988 an inhumation burial was discovered during the removal of a field fence on a farm. It had a covering of limestone pebbles and appears to have been in an unlined grave. No accompanying artifacts were found. The human remains represented an adult, probably male. Two samples were giving dates of 275+-40 BP and 245 +- BP which calibrate to AD 1480-1800 and AD 1510-1950 respectively (NMI).

• WM006-075 Bridge
  Description

  No surface remains visible of the medieval bridge of Ballinalack that is depicted on the 1659 Down Survey barony maps of Moygoish and Corkaree (NLI, MS 723-4). The bridge traversed the Inny River and was situated along an important medieval routeway connecting the medieval towns of Mullingar and Longford . The terrier of the Down Survey map of Corkerry Barony recorded that ‘issuing out of the said Loughagarne is called the River Ihny upon wch is a bridge at Ballinelack wch is the cheife pass into this country’ (ibid.). The bridge was guarded by two castles (WM006-048----; WM006-049----) on the Ballinalack side which are depicted on the 1654-56 Down Survey map of Leny parish. In 1682 Sir Henry Piers of Tristernagh described Ballinalack Briddge as an 'antient and well built bridge, which having of late been very incommodious and dangerous for travellers, is now very well repaired, adorned and rendered safe for them at the charge of the county' (Vallancey 1786, 4). The present Ballinalack Bridge dates from 1874 and replaced an earlier five arch bridge. This earlier bridge was described in 1837 as, ‘situated on the banks of the River Inny, over which is a bridge of five arches, and on the road from Mullingar to Longford’ (Lewis 1837, 109). The present bridge described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage consists of a ‘twin-arched road bridge over River Inny, dated 1874. Now out of use and superseded by a modern bridge to the south. Constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with rusticated rock-faced limestone voussoirs to arches and rusticated limestone copping over parapet. Projecting V-profile cut water to central pier. This bridge replaced an earlier five arch bridge located at this site, at a time when the River Inny was considerably wider at this point’(www.buildingsofireland.ie). A date-stone on the N face of the S parapet wall of the bridge bears the inscription ‘ 1874 Ballinalack Bridge Rebuilt by Upper Inny Drainage Board James Dillon Engineer’.
