  Description

  Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by undulating rushy grassland adjacent to the Royal Canal and 95m SW of Kiddy's Bridge. Ringfort (WM010-032----) 430m to SE. Present remains consist of a D-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 26m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank. This bank is visible from NE-S-NW. The N straight edge of this monument is formed by the tow path for the Royal Canal, which cuts through the N side of the earthwork. This earthwork is depicted as a house with adjoining field boundary on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and not as an antiquity. The earthwork probably represents the levelled remains of the post-1700 house and adjoining field boundary. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 June 2017

  Description

  Situated on low-lying grassland with restricted views. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a sub-rectilinear shaped enclosure and annotated as a ‘fort’. Depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and as an irregular shaped field on subsequent editions of the OS maps. A field fence which formed the S side of this enclosure has been removed. The field fences which form the N, E & W enclosing element of the monument still survive today as field boundaries.   Single-arch hump-backed canal accommodation bridge over Royal Canal, built c.1810. Constructed of rubble limestone with ashlar limestone detailing including projecting string course at parapet base level/road level and copping over parapets. Dressed limestone piers to ends of parapet walling. Cut stone plaques to each parapet, without inscription. Towpath runs under bridge to south. Located to the west of Ballynacarrigy.

  Description

  Single-arch hump-backed canal bridge carrying small road over Royal Canal, built c.1810. Constructed of dressed limestone with ashlar limestone detailing including projecting string course at parapet base level/road level and copping over parapets. Cut stone piers to ends of parapet walling. Towpath runs under bridge to south. Located to the west of Ballynacarrigy and adjacent to canal lock (15401006) and lock keeper's house (15401007).

  Canal lock, built c.1810, consisting of pair of (restored) timber and steel breast gates with timber footboards, tail gates and balance beams. Set within ashlar limestone lock channel. Located adjacent to Kelly's Bridge (15401005) and associated lock keeper's house (15401007). To the west of Ballynacarrigy.

  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey canal lock keeper's house, built c.1810. Now out of use. Hipped natural slate roof with projecting stone eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and a central rendered chimneystack. Roughcast rendered walls over rubble limestone construction. Square-headed window openings, set in recessed round-headed arches, with cut stone sills and timber casement windows. Square-headed doorcase to centre, set in round-headed recessed round-headed arch, having battened timber double doors. Located adjacent to lock 38 (15401006). Storage shed to the southwest.
