  Description

  There are no surface remains visible of any church site standing inside the ecclesiastical enclosure (WM036-042004-) at Clonaltra West. No church is depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch map at this location. The interior of the enclosure is depicted as a graveyard (WM036-042006-) on the OS 6-inch map and there is a bullaun stone (WM036-042003-) with two Early Christian cross-slabs (WM036-042002-/007-) located on the enclosing element of the enclosure at N. • WM036-042002 Cross-slab
  Description

  Fragment of early Christian cross-slab standing in group of trees containing bullaun stone and fragment of a second cross-slab (WM036-042007-) in N quadrant of ecclesiastical enclosure (WM036-042004-) at Clonaltra West. The interior of the enclosure is depicted as a graveyard (WM036-042006-) on the OS 6-inch map and local tradition records that this graveyard was also used as a children's burial ground (WM036-042008-). Site of holy well (WM036-042005-) 290m to W. Fragment consists of the lower portion of a slab (H 0.4m x Wth 0.42m x T 0.05m) decorated with a ringed-cross lying at the base of a bullaun stone. The lower portion of the slab contains the outline of a cross-shaft with a ringed cross rising from the top of the shaft. A small stud is depicted at the junction between the shaft and cross-head. The top half of the ringed cross is missing. Described in 1974 as a ‘yellowish sandstone slab found leaning against a double bullaun’ and consisting of an ‘inscribed slab, roughly shield-shaped, bears what appears to be the bottom portion of a ringed cross in low relief, with the arms and upper two-thirds of the ring broken off’ (Hicks 1974, 158). According to Hicks there was ‘a small standing stone or gravestone with no observable markings, almost buried beneath a heap of smaller stones in the south-eastern quarter of the site’ (ibid.).   Description

  Bullaun stone with fragments of 2 Early Christian cross-slabs (WM036-042002-/007-) standing in a group of trees in N quadrant of ecclesiastical enclosure (WM036-042004-) at Clonaltra West. The interior of the enclosure is depicted as a graveyard (WM036-042006-) on the OS 6-inch map and local tradition records that this graveyard was also used as a children's burial ground (WM036-042008-). Site of holy well (WM036-042005-) 290m to W. Large conglomerate boulder (1.1m x 0.7m; H 0.4m) with quartz inclusions containing two narrow egg-shaped hollows on its upper surface. The SW hollow (diam. 0.36 x 0.26m; D 0.3m) is better preserved than the NE hollow (diam. 0.36 x 0.27m; D 0.2m) which is partially damaged. Known locally as St. Patrick's knee stone. • WM036-042004 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  In grassland on NE facing slope of rising ground with good views to N and E. Poorly preserved remains of large roughly oval-shaped enclosure (dims. 100m N-S; 120m E-W) defined by an earthen bank mainly reduced to a scarp (H 0.6m) and outer fosse which is only visible on N side only, elsewhere it has been filled in. Depicted as a Grave Yard on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Two fragments of early Christian cross-slabs (WM036-042002-/007-) standing in group of trees containing bullaun stone (WM036-042003-) known as St. Patrick's knee stone in N quadrant of ecclesiastical enclosure. The interior of the enclosure is depicted as a graveyard (WM036-042006-) on the OS 6-inch map and local tradition records that this graveyard was also used as a children's burial ground (WM036-042008-). Site of holy well (WM036-042005-) dedicated to St. Patrick 290m to W. Large tree standing in SE quadrant of enclosure contains a some upright stones of unknown antiquity. There are the faintest traces of a smaller enclosure encircling this tree which may mark the site of the children's burial ground (WM032-042008-) (Swan 1988, 11).   Marked as 'Grave Yard' on 1st edition OS 6-inch map (1838). Marked as 'Grave Yd.' (Disused)' on RMP (1995) map. Documentary evidence states that unbaptised children were buried here up to about 1950.
