- WM024-016 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a very slight N-facing slope, in pasture with good views to NW and N. Ringfort (WM024-017----) 90m to NE. Annotated ‘Rathskeagh Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a bivallate earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as an almost levelled, roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 36m E-W; 35m N-S) defined by a scarp and external fosse. The scarp (approx. H 1.1m) has been levelled and is low in profile and the fosse (Wth at top 8.3m; basal Wth 2.7m) is wide and shallow (approx. D 1m). The original entrance is not recognisable and the interior has been partially skimmed away. Outline of monument is clearly visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. Description
Situated on a very slight natural rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views to the NW and ESE. Ringfort (WM024-016----) 95m to SW. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a bivallate earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as a partially levelled roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 40m E-W; 38m N-S) enclosed by a scarp (H 1.4m) and external fosse. A very faint, low profile scarp is traceable and is best preserved to E. A slight fosse (Wth at top 5.3m; basal Wth 1.5m; D 0.6m) can be traced most of the way around, although it is partially obscured at E by a modern field fence running NNW-SSE. The original entrance is not recognisable. Much of the interior has been quarried away. Outline of poorly preserved monument clearly visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. - WM024-012 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight natural rise, in gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 63m N-S; 59m E-W) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The earthen bank is well-defined, although it has occasional disturbance gaps. The outer face of the bank has been steepened all around. It forms part of a modern field fence from SE-S-SSW. A drain has been excavated into the base of the fosse. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and is divided into three parts by a Y-shaped bank. It crosses the centre running N-S and splits to SE and SW, enclosing a residual area in the S sector. A Preservation Order was placed on this monument on 10/04/1984 (SMR file). OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 25m) standing inside a woodland plantation. Levelled monument described in 1978 as no surface remains visible. Description
Main entrance gates to Ballynacor House (now demolished), erected c.1740, comprising a pair of dressed limestone gate piers, on square-plan, with cut stone ball finial over. Cast-iron gate with finials to west side with concrete pier and wall to east side. Located to the northwest of the site of Ballynacor House and to the east of Ballymore.
