  Description

  Situated on rushy grassland with restricted views of the surrounding countryside. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 36m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a shallow external fosse. The bank and fosse have been levelled in the E quadrant. The interior rises towards the centre. A field fence intersects the perimeter of the monument at SW.   Description

  Situated on a natural rise in rushy reclaimed grassland with wide views of the surrounding countryside. A stream running roughly E-W lies 80m to N. present remains consist of a large raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 37m N-S; 35m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and a deep intervening fosse. The outer bank is levelled from E-S. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.7m) in the inner bank, and a causeway across the fosse (Wth 2.9m) at E. There is a possible hut site (WM013-013001-), visible as a platform in the centre of the interior.   Description

  Clonyn House and its landscaped gardens are described in the terrier of the 1654-57 Down map of Castletown parish which recorded that the in ‘Clonyn there is the ruines of a fayre house with a fewe backroomes Wherein the Earle of West Meath dwells with a faire orchard and a garden with a grove of trees’ (NLI, MS 723-4). Clonyn House is not depicted on the Down Survey maps. This 'fayre house' was probably built on the site of or incorporated the medieval castle (WM013-014001-) belonging to the Nugent family. In 1538 an inquisition into the estate of the recently deceased Richard Nugent Baron of Delvin listed ‘Clonyn. A castle and 160a arable; worth £8’ as part of his estate (Ainsworth 1958, 126). Annotated on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map as Clonyn House and depicted as a ruinous structure on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Present remains consist of the ruins of an ivy-clad multi-period house. The core of the building consists of a late seventeenth century five bay gabled house standing two storeys high. This central house has been extended to the N and S. A square turret built on to the S side of the range bears a plaque with the Nugent crest (WM013-014002-). Throughout the ruins there are numerous pieces of sparrow-pecked dressed stone, typical of the fifteenth and sixteenth century which has been incorporated into the fabric of the ruins. To the E of the house there is a rectangular enclosure, probably a parterre on two levels & bounded by a low battlemented wall. This is not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Clonyn House described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as following; 'Remains of earlier five-bay two-storey house over basement house with attic level to the rear (west), built c.1680, having remains of pitched roof and stone chimneystacks, one set diagonally to roofline. Plaque with crest of Nugent Family, dated 1680, to façade. Various later extensions to house dating from the early-eighteenth century to the early-nineteenth century (early-nineteenth century additions in a Georgian Gothic-style).   Situated on a natural rise of ground on the landscaped demesne lands of Clonyn House located 725m to the NNW. This earthwork known locally as a 'fort' is depicted as a grove of trees standing E of the main avenue leading up to Clonyn House on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. An enclosure (WM013-033----) lies 45m to the SW and a second enclosure (WM013-114----) is 110m to the W. Possible ringfort that was re-used as a tree-ring as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne. Remains consist of a circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 29m NW-SE) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7m) and narrow external fosse (Wth 1.9m; ext. D 0.2m). There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 4.5m) at WSW. Deep cultivation ridges aligned E-W are visible running across the interior of the monument. It is not clear if all three earthworks (WM013-033-/114----) are the remains of ringforts that were converted into tree-rings as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne or whether they were built as tree-rings in the post-1700 period.   Description

  Situated on a natural rise of ground on the landscaped demesne lands of Clonyn House located 750m to the NNW. This earthwork known locally as a 'fort' is depicted as a grove of trees standing 70m E of the main avenue leading up to Clonyn House on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. An enclosure (WM013-032----) lies 45m to the NE and a third enclosure (WM013-114----) is 60m to the NW. Possible ringfort that was re-used as a tree-ring as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne. Remains consist of an almost D-shaped area (dims. 35m NE-SW x 33.5m NW-SE) with straight side at W enclosed by the poorly preserved remains of an earthen bank (int. H 0.15m; ext. H 0.35m) mainly reduced to a scarp and shallow external fosse (Wth 1.9m; ext. D 025m). No entrance feature visible. The interior slopes from NNW-SSE. The stumps of trees are still visible on the site indicating that the ringfort was adapted as a tree-ring in the post 1700 period. These tree stumps are no longer visible on the Digital Globe aerial photographs taken November 2011. It is not clear if all three earthworks (WM013-033-/114----) are the remains of ringforts that were converted into tree-rings as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne or whether they were built as tree-rings in the post-1700 period.   Situated on a natural rise of ground on the landscaped demesne lands of Clonyn House located 650m to the NNW. This earthwork is depicted as a grove of trees standing E of the main avenue leading up to Clonyn House on the 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. A possible ringfort (WM013-032----) lies 125m to the E and a second possible ringfort (WM013-033----) is 95m to the SSE. Possible ringfort that was re-used as a tree-ring as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne. Remains consist of a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 29m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank and narrow external fosse. Cultivation ridges aligned NNE-SSW are visible running across the interior of the monument. It is not clear if all three earthworks (WM013-032-/033----) are the remains of ringforts that were converted into tree-rings as part of the landscaping of Clonyn House demesne or whether they were built as tree-rings in the post-1700 period. • WM013-125 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in grassland on a low glacial hillock with stream immediately to S on the demesne lands of Clonyn Castle (WM013-014001-) located c. 800m to SSW. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map this earthwork is located in the small townland of Clonagapple with the stream to the S marking the S boundary of this townland. On later editions of the OS maps the monument is shown standing inside the townland of Clonyn. Present remains consist of a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 40m N-S; 45m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank with traces of an external fosse cut across by later post-1700 field boundary at NNE. The enclosure or possible ringfort appears to be standing in S quadrant of a small rectangular field of post 1700 date.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey bank, built c.1920, with projecting flat-roofed entrance porch to front (southeast). Hipped natural slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Later dormer window inserted to northeast side of roof. Roughcast rendered walls with stucco detailing. Square-headed window openings with stucco surrounds and timber sash and timber casement windows. Tripartite timber sliding sash window to northeast elevation, cast-iron bars to ground floor windows. Square-headed doorcase with overlight to projecting porch, square-headed doorcase with concrete canopy to northeast elevation. Set slightly back from road with low rendered boundary wall with cast-iron railings over to front (southeast).

• Clonyn Castle, castle/fortified house, 1865–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-and three-storey over basement Gothic Revival-style castle, built between 1867-76. Constructed on a square-plan with four-storey circular turrets to each corner. Projecting single-bay single-storey battlemented porch with oriel window above to centre of entrance façade (northwest) and projecting three-storey battlemented tower on square plan to centre of southeast elevation. Hipped natural slate roofs hidden behind battlemented parapet with machicolations and crowned with Irish-style crenellations. Constructed of heavy dark limestone/calp rubble with a battered base and ashlar detailing. Round-headed window openings with cut stone surrounds, cut stone sills and (mainly) one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Round-headed doorcase with heavy stone surrounds and hoodmouldings to porch on front façade (northwest). Interesting interior including an elaborate two-storey hall with a Romanesque-style arcaded gallery constructed of marble and Caen stone. Set in extensive landscaped grounds, which are now used for a golf course. Remains of earlier five-bay two-storey house over basement house with attic level to the rear (west), built c.1680, having remains of pitched roof and stone chimneystacks, one set diagonally to roofline. Plaque with crest of Nugent Family, dated 1680, to façade. Various later extensions to house dating from the early-eighteenth century to the early-nineteenth century (early-nineteenth century additions in a Georgian Gothic-style). Extensive ranges of ruinous outbuildings to the north of the earlier house.

  Description

  Gothic Revival-style gateway, built c.1810, comprising pair of rendered octagonal gate piers and cast-iron double gates, flanked by sections of rendered wall with cut-stone coping, integral pointed arch-headed pedestrian entrances with cast-iron gates and terminated by piers on octagonal plan. Inner piers have moulded clustered colonnettes with moulded cornice and finials over. Estate wall, constructed of limestone rubble, to north and south of gateway. Located to east of Clonyn Castle with remains of former gate lodge to immediate north.
