  Description

  Situated on a low rise, on a NW-facing slope, in low-lying wet pasture, overlooking a stream c. 45m to NW. A castle site (WM029-034----) lies c. 40m to E. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a small oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 10m NE-SW; 8m NW-SE). Monument described in 1973 as a small, roughly circular-shaped mound of earth and stone the base of which is enclosed by traces of a fosse which is best preserved from SE-S-SW. The top of the mound is gently rounded. There are the remains of a square-shaped building (dims. 4m x 4m) at S which is defined by stone walls (H 2m) that are best preserved to S and W. Only the base of the N and E walls survive. Monument is visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Situated on NW-facing slope, in low-lying, wet pasture, overlooking a stream c. 85m to NW. A bowl-barrow (WM029-033----) lies c. 40m to W and a railway line running NW-SE lies c. 45m to NE. Depicted on an 1820 Estate Map (NLI 14 A 25) as a castle ruin marked on the site of an earthwork. Not depicted on OS mapping. Monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. Castle site is visible as a roughly square-shaped cropmark (approx. dims. 30m NW-SE; 30m NE-SW) defined by a dark green band of differential growth in contrast to the surrounding field, on OSi aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a rise in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as an oval-shaped enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (dims. 60m N-S; 50m E-W). Monument described in 1973 as a roughly oval-shaped area enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is present from WSW-W-N-NE, is reduced to a scarp from NE-E-ESE and is probably incorporated into a field boundary from ESE-S-WSW. An intervening fosse is visible from WSW-W-N-NE and appears to be obscured from NE-E-ESE by a later field boundary running NW-SE. There is a gap at W however this may be modern. The interior rises from the perimeter towards the centre and some small boulders project from the surface. A children’s burial ground (WM029-035001-) is reputed to be within.   Description

  The site is orientated E-W and consists of a narrow walkway (L 770m; Wth 0.4m; D 0.09m) of between two and four longitudinal roundwoods (av. diam 0.056m) of ash and alder. At one sighting, a peg was evident in section and tool marks were noted on a number of pieces.

  Description

  Single-arched railway bridge, built c.1859, carrying road over former Great Southern and Great Western Railway Company’s Portarlington to Athlone railway line. Still in active use. Constructed of snecked rusticated limestone with rock-faced limestone voussoirs to the arch, ashlar limestone string course at road level and ashlar limestone coping over parapet walls. Located to the southeast of Athlone.

• Cloonbonny House, house, 1780–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey over basement house on a U-shaped plan, built c.1790, having two two-storey returns and a modern flat-roofed extension to the rear (southeast). Hipped natural slate roof with a rendered chimneystacks to either end (southwest and northeast), aligned along roof-ridge to rear pitch. Roughcast rendered walls with square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Central round-headed cut stone doorcase having a pair of Doric columns supported a fluted lintel over. Timber panelled door with a radial/spoke fanlight over. Flight of three-cut stone steps to front. Set well back from road in mature grounds with entrances to the north and to the south. Located to the south of Athlone and to the northwest of Ballynahown.
