- WM010-015 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight rise in fairly well drained grass-land with good views of the surrounding countryside. Stream marking townland boundary with Conlanstown 145m to NW. Rock Brook house 250m to S. Ringfort (WM010-016----) 240m to SSE. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map an old laneway is shown running NW from Rock Brook towards the W side of the ringfort. An unusually large slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 75m NW-SE; 74m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank mainly reduced to a scarp. The bank is fragmentary and has several disturbance gaps of post-1700 date. Original entrance feature not identified. The interior rises towards the centre. A post-1700 field fence running NNW-SSE intersects the monument at S. Compiled by: Frank Coyne & Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 9 February 2017
- WM010-016 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
Situated on grassland 150m E of Rock Brook House. Outlined as a circular earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map with possible mound-barrow (WM010-045----) 110m to the S. Not depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No surface remains visible of levelled earthwork which appears to have been a landscape feature associated with Rock-Brook House. Depicted in a similar fashion to the mound-barrow (WM010-045----) which may suggest that this earthwork was originally a mound barrow. Alternatively it is possible that both monuments are landscaped tree-rings dating from the post 1700 period. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 June 2017
- WM010-045 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
Situated on grassland 210m SE of Rock Brook House. Outlined as a circular earthwork on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map with similar earthwork (WM010-016----) 110m to the N. Not depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Present remains consist of a circular shaped mound (diam. 17m) defined by a scarp with a shallow external fosse. There are traces of cultivation ridges on the mound and in the surrounding field. It is possible that it is a mound-barrow which was landscaped as a tree ring associated with Rock Brook House in the post-1700 period. - WM010-013 Castle - unclassified
Description
Situated on NE facing slope of a low natural ridge with good views in all directions. Conlanstown House immediately to S with area marked as Shanbally 230m to NW. Annotated as ‘Site of Castle’ on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map where it is shown standing on a circular-shaped mound. On this map a Trig. Station marking the spot height of 264 ft. appears to mark the site of the castle. A low semi-circular-shaped scarp (diam. 33m NW-SE) visible from NW-N-NE is all remains of this levelled castle site which appears to have stood on top of a low flat-topped mound. - WM010-014 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
Depicted as a circular enclosure with trees on perimeter on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map, annotated ‘Rathmore’, with a gravel pit outside bank at SE. Depicted as a circular-shaped monument with roadway running SE from SE edge of monument. Possible ringfort re-used as a tree-ring in the post 1700 period. Conlanstown House located 445m to NW. Present remains consist of an elongated oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 33m NNW-SSE; 19m ENE-WSW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank. The bank is fragmentary, and there is a possible entrance gap (Wth 1.1m) at NNW. Just inside the bank in the E quadrant of the interior are four large stone slabs, two set on edge side by side, and one lying flat with the fourth lying against it. To the E of the centre is another large grass-covered slab. There are several tree trunks in the interior, possibly as the result of the site being reused as a tree ring. There is a large depression at the ESE side of the monument, probably the result of quarrying. Compiled by: Frank Coyne and Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 June 2017
