• WM027-045 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight SW-facing slope, in gently undulating pasture and tillage. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped tree-lined enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 32m) defined by the upper edges of a very faint, intermittent scarp. There are very vague suggestions of an outer fosse. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a slight SW-facing slope. Levelled monument is visible today as a subcircular-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture (meadow). Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a suboval-shaped tree-lined enclosure. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an hexagonal-shaped tree-lined earthwork and on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork which appears to have been quarried across much of the northern portion. Monument described in 1969 as a roughly D-shaped earthwork defined by the straight side to S and by a bank from W-N-E which is planted with trees. There is no trace of an eternal fosse. The interior is raised c. 3 feet [0.9m] above the external ground level. Monument described in 1971 as no surface remains visible. Viewed from a distance because the site is in the middle of a meadow, nevertheless it appears to have been completely levelled.
