• WM005-004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low NW-SE ridge with good views to the SE, SW & NW of the surrounding countryside. An oval-shaped area (diam. 47.6m) enclosed by an earthen bank (ext. H 1m) which has been levelled from N-E, the remainder of which appears to have been steepened both inside and out in relatively modern times with deep external fosse (Wth 2.4m), best preserved from ESE-S-SSW. Causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2m) at NNW and modern gap in bank at S. The interior has a slight slope from SE-NE, and there are traces of cultivation ridges running E-W across the interior. Several modern fences encroach on the site, and a deep drain running NW-SE cuts through the fosse at E. Modern farm buildings located immediately N of ringfort. • Derrydooan House, house, 1740–1800 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1770, with projecting flat-roofed glazed entrance porch to the centre of the main façade (northwest). Half-hipped natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles, raised verges and two large rendered chimneystacks with terracotta chimney pots. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with quoins to raised quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings with replacement timber casement windows. Semi-circular window opening with radial glazing bars to centre of first floor above doorcase. Square-headed doorcase behind modern porch. Set back from road in mature grounds. Located to the west of Rathowen Village adjacent to main entrance to Newpass House (15400501).

• New Bridge, bridge, 1850–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Single-arched road bridge over Black River, built c.1860. Constructed using coursed rusticated limestone rubble with rusticated rock-faced limestone voussoirs. Projecting string course at road level. Dressed limestone barrel-shaped coping over parapet and terminating piers, on square-plan to either end (north and south). Located to the west of Rathowen.
