• WM026-077 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a small circular-shaped earthwork (diam. 9.5m) defined by a scarp, fosse and external bank. Levelled monument described in 1971 as the remains of a circular-shaped area (diam. 23m) defined by a scarp with external fosse. A low, smooth scarp (H 0.8m) with faint traces of a fosse (approx. Wth 2.1m) are visible from SE-S-W-N. A linear wire fence skirts the monument to N and E which forms part of a modern dwelling plot. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM026-078 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Levelled ringfort situated on a slight rise, on SSW-facing slope, in gently undulating pasture. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a large oval-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1971 as a large roughly circular-shaped grass-covered area (diam. 48m) defined by two broad concentric brown bands (Wth 3.6-3.9m) of earth which are assumed to represent fosses that were exposed during recent scrub clearance. There is part of a third similar outer ring (Wth 5m) visible from SW-W-NNW. The intervening area between the brown rings (where the banks are assumed to have been) are grass-covered areas (Wth 3-3.6m) similar to the interior. The presence of three potential fosses would suggest that this was a trivallate earthwork. A gap (Wth 11.4m) in the inner bank and a corresponding gap (Wth 6m) in the outer grass-covered rings at SE may represent the entrance. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre. Monument is visible as an upstanding oval-shaped enclosure on aerial photograph (CUCAP BDK019) taken 14/07/1970. • WM026-100001 Church
  Description

  Polygonal shaped graveyard (WM026-100003-) enclosed by a post medieval stone wall with levelled 19th century Church of Ireland building located in N quadrant of graveyard. The ruins of Enniscoffey House are located 180m to ENE. In 1976 the levelled church site was described as following; ‘The church marked on the 1911 OS revision as standing has been completely demolished and only the grass-covered outline, with depression within now remains. It appears to have been a rather large estate church’ (SMR file 12/03/1976). There is no evidence to suggest that there was a medieval church inside this graveyard. In 1810 it was recorded that there was no church in the parish of Enniscoffey (Carlisle 1810). The Church of Ireland building was built in 1819 with a gift of £900 from the Board of First Fruits (Lewis 1837, 602). No church building or glebe land is depicted on the 1656-9 Down Survey map of Enniscoffey parish (NLI MS 723-4). Compiled by: Caimin O’Brien Date of upload: 24 August 2015

  Description

  Possible ecclesiastical enclosure identified by Swan (1988, 12) who recorded that there was evidence of a possible enclosure in the quadrantal form of the boundary wall of the graveyard (WM033-031001-). Earthworks described in 1977 as following; ‘to the N & S of the graveyard low banks can be seen, running in an arc from the NW corner of the wall to the field bank & on the S enclosing a no. of small subrectangular encloures. There is no indication of any features to the E of the field bank’ (SMR file 16/06/1977).   Description

  Polygonal shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 41m N-S; 50m E-W) enclosed by a post medieval stone wall with main entrance gate at W and smaller gateway at E. Levelled church site (WM026-100001-) located in N quadrant of graveyard, Enniscoffey House ruins located 180m to ENE. Graveyard described in 1977 as following; ‘a relatively modern hexagonal enclosure bounded by a stone wall. There is now no sign of the church (WM026-100001-) indicated in the N of the graveyard on the 1911 OS 6” map. To the N & S of the graveyard low banks (WM026-100002-) can be seen, running in an arc from the NW corner of the wall to the field bank & on the S enclosing a no. of small subrectangular enclosures. There is no indication of any features to the E of the field bank. An old pathway can be seen running from the gateway at the modern roadway into the graveyard. There is a small gate in the E wall of the graveyard opposite which is a gateway in the field bank. This probably was for access from Enniscoffey House whose ruins lie a short distance to the E.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement country house, built c.1785, having a full-height canted-bay projection to the centre of the main elevation (west). Return to the rear (east) and an extension to the south. Now in use as a guest house and as a restaurant. Hipped natural slate roof with projecting cut stone eaves course having cut stone corbels and a pair of smooth rendered chimneystacks to the centre. Roughcast rendered walls with square-headed window openings having cut stone sills and replacement timber casement windows. Round-headed doorcase to the front face of canted bay projection (west) having cut limestone surround with fluted lintel and projecting keystone over, a spoke fanlight and a timber panelled door. Cut limestone steps to front flanked by rendered walls to either side (north and south). Balustraded wall surrounds basement to front of house (west). Main entrance gates to the north. Set back from road in own grounds to the southeast of Mullingar.
