• WM025-148 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the top of a steep slope at an OS spot height (318ft/97m OD), overlooking the eastern shoreline of Lough Ennell, c. 200m to NW and with magnificent views to W and N. Monument described in 1978 as a D-shaped area (dims. 29m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. The bank is low and is visible from NW-N-NE and from SW-W-NW. The perimeter is formed along the straight side to E by a modern hedgerow running N-S. The fosse is visible from NNW-N-NNE and is absent elsewhere. There is no indication of an entrance. There is a steep natural slope outside the fosse to N. There is a low scarp with traces of stone facing at the foot of the bank from SSE-S-SW which may be the remnants of a field fence depicted at this location on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25” map. The edge of the bank and a small part of the interior has been dug away at NNE. The interior has a slight S-facing slope with some stone visible on the surface yet no recognisable features.   Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1976 and described as following; 'A small roughly D-shaped enclosure (diam. 34m N-S; 35m E-W) bounded by the remains of a low earthen bank and an internal fosse, the bank is best preserved at the S-W. The bank is defaced at a number of points by animal tracks but there is no indication of an original entrance. The interior is fairly even but slopes down in the E part. No internal features are visible. The bank is overgrown with traces and there is a single tree in the W of the interior. The site is surrounded by modern field banks and fences. The fences on the S and E are very low but that on the E has probably destroyed that side of the site. The site was probably originally circular.   Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1976 and described as following; 'A large roughly circular (diam. 34m N-S; 34m E-W) earthen embankment with remains of an earthen bank at its upper edge and of a fosse at its foot. A modern field wall runs outside the bank all around. The fosse is very faint and is only preserved on the W-SW and on the NE. The bank is best preserved on the NNE-NE and is faint elsewhere. There are modern entrances to the interior on the SE and NW and a gap at NE, but it is not clear if either was an original entrance. The interior is fairly level and seems to be featureless. The site has been planted with trees. The site is on a slight rise close to the E shore of Lough Ennell’ (SMR File 19/06/1976).

• WM032-025 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1976 and described as following; 'A small roughly circular low embankment of earth and stone. There are traces of a low bank of earth and stone along its upper edge. This bank is very faint and is best preserved on the N and is virtually absent on the E edge of the embankment which is defaced in a number of places by animal tracks but there is no indication of an original entrance. The interior (diam. 27m N-S; 29m E-W) is rather uneven and there is a small rock outcrop to the S of the centre. Other stones are visible just on the surface in the N half of the interior. No internal features are visible. The edge of the embankment is overgrown with trees on the N, E and W. The site is on low ground in good pasture. There is a good view of L. • WM032-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1971 and described as following; 'An approx. circular slightly uneven enclosure (diam. 38.8m N-S; 35.6m E-W) bounded by a high steep scarp with very slight remains of an earthen bank on its upper edge and with very slight remains of a fosse at its foot. The fosse is visible (but barely so) from E-S and from W-NNW. The scarp is broken down by cattle in places. A later field bank skirts the site, partly covering the site of the fosse on the W. A gap (Wth 3.3m) on the ESE may represent the entrance. The interior has a general slight slope towards the entrance but it drops slightly towards the perimeter on the other sides also. A tree grows near the centre. The scarp is partially covered by two thorn bushes. Sited on a slight rise on gently undulating fertile pasture and meadow land. Good views.’ (SMR File 23/07/1971).
