- WM031-066 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a ridge in undulating pasture, in area of rock outcrop with extensive views to S, W and N. Annotated ‘Kilpatrick Fort’ on the 1837 ed. OS Fair Plan map and depicted as an irregular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1979 as an irregular almost D-shaped area (dims. 35m N-S; 32m NW-SE) with a short straight side to NW, enclosed by a bank of earth and stone. The bank is best preserved from ENE-E-S and is very faint from S-SW and from WNW-N. The remains of an old field wall are built against the outside of the bank from N-E and the monument is cut by a public road running NNE-SSW to E. There is a narrow fosse-like depression outside the bank from N-E but this may be an old field drain and there is a quarry depression outside the bank at E. There is no sign of an entrance. The interior is quite disturbed except for the S and SW quadrants where the ground slopes up from the perimeter towards the centre. Two collapsed areas indicated a probable souterrain (WM031-066001-) are visible in the N and NE quadrants. The interior to N of the souterrain is also disturbed. Description
Situated on a ridge in undulating pasture, a lot of rock outcrop in the vicinity, with extensive views to S, W and N. Annotated 'Caves' on the 1910 ed. OS 6-inch map and depicted as two small rectangular-shaped structures marked in centre and NE quadrant of ringfort (WM031-066----). According to O’Donovan in 1837 (OSNB No. 1, 12 and 18), the ringfort known as ‘Kilpatrick Fort’ contains two ‘caves’. Monument described in 1979 as a large roughly rectangular-shaped depression containing a lot of small stones is in the centre of the ringfort and a second roughly rectangular-shaped depression is just inside the bank in the NE quadrant. These depressions probably represent the locations of the ‘caves’ mentioned on the OS Fair Plan map. The area of the ringfort to N of the souterrain also has a disturbed appearance. - WM031-093 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the edge of a high ridge, in pasture, with good views to S, W and N. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims.41m N-S; 28.5m E-W) enclosed by a high scarp from S-W-NW which is reduced to the low remains of a levelled scarp from NW-N-E-S-SW. The interior has a W-facing slope and a relatively smooth surface. A field fence running NW-SE cuts across the NE portion of the perimeter. The external ground level falls sharply from the base of the scarp at W. An old field bank runs close to the scarp at this point.
