• WM017-035 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a natural rise, on the SSE side, in gently undulating, rough pasture. Possibly the remains of a ringfort that was modified as a tree-ring in the post-1700 period. The monument is visible on Digital Globe photography as a roughly oval-shaped area defined by trees. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped tree-planted enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly D-shaped tree-planted enclosure (approx. dims. 26m ENE-WSW; 25m NNW-SSE) with straight side at N. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 22m NW-SE; 19m NE-SW) defined by a bank which has been reduced to a scarp. The bank and scarp were modified at a later date from SE-S-W-N. The original entrance is not visible and there is no visible trace of a fosse. A gentle, modern bank of earth and stone defines the exterior from N-E-ESE. The interior has a gentle SSE-facing slope with vague remnants of cultivation ridges (long-axis NNW-SSE).   Description

  Situated on the NNW side of a hillock surrounded by other hummocks and gently undulating pasture with good views to SE. Faint outline of levelled ringfort is barely visible on Digital Globe aerial photography. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped enclosure (35m N-S; 32m E-W) with pond annotated ‘Pollmore’ c. 25m to N. Shown as an oval-shaped enclosure, delimited by two concentric lines and annotated ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Described in 1971 as levelled monument with a second undated ASI report stating, ‘The site has been levelled and no surface features remain’ (SMR File). • WM017-065 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated just below the summit, on the N side of a natural ridge, with extensive views to W, N and E. Monument is visible as a circular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped tree-lined enclosure, with field boundary running NW-SE extending from NW and intersecting with a field boundary running NE-SW at ESE. Described in 1980 as a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 38.5m N-S; 37.5m E-W) enclosed by a bank which is reduced to a scarp, an outer fosse with the very slight remains of a low counterscarp bank outside it. There is no sign of an original entrance. The inner bank is best preserved and quite substantial from E-S-W, is reduced to a scarp from W-N-NNE and is poorly preserved from NNE-NE-E. There is a modern gap in the scarp at W and some cattle breaches at N and SSE. The fosse is well preserved where it is wide and deep from SE-SW-W and has been partially infilled from W-N-E-SE. The outer bank is very faint and is only clearly visible from SE-S-SW. The interior has a slight W-facing slope.   Description

  Situated on gentle NE facing slope of a natural rise, in pasture with good views to NW, NE and SE. Ringfort (WM017-065----) c. 180m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped enclosure, with field boundary running NW-SE extending from S. Annotated, ‘Condragh Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Ringfort not depicted on the revised OS 6-inch map, however curving field boundary on this map at E preserves enclosing element of ringfort. Curving field boundary and faint outline of levelled bank visible as a cropmark from SE-W-N on Digital Globe aerial photography. Described in 1971 as a levelled, roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 27m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) enclosed by a modern wall from NNE-E-S and defined by a very slight rise in the ground surface from S-W-NNE, with traces of an external fosse at SW. N o entrance feature visible. The interior has a gentle NE-facing slope with no visible trace of any significant features. • WM017-067 Road - road/trackway
  Description

  In 1972 it was recorded that 'according to local information there are remains of an old 'cobbled' road near the present road which was built after the famine. The older road is said to have been built by Cromwell' (SMR file 1972). In 1984 the site was visited and it was recorded that 'there are no traces of the cobbled road surviving today but the track of the old road can still be traced' (SMR file 1984). The extent of this possible old roadway can seen where it is partially indicated on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map. Traces of a linear bank representing the remains of this old roadway are visible today running parallel to a field boundary on Digital Globe aerial photographs. • WM017-071 Moated site
  Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in low-lying wet pasture with marshy hollows in the vicinity. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a roughly rectilinear-shaped tree-lined earthwork. Described in 1971 as a rectilinear-shaped area (approx. dims. 37m NNW-SSE; 28m WSW-ENE) enclosed by an earthen bank which is reduced to a steep scarp having an intervening fosse and an outer bank. No clear entrance feature visible. The inner bank is best preserved at the SSE-side and elsewhere it is almost completely denuded down to the interior. There is a breach in the inner bank at the SW, NW and NNE corner. The intervening fosse is best preserved at the NNW and SSE-side, where it is steep, wide and flat-bottomed and is otherwise very slight elsewhere. The outer bank is best preserved at the NNW and SSE-side and is very slight elsewhere. It has a large gap at the SE corner and a breach at the NNE corner. The interior has a fairly smooth surface, which rises slightly from the perimeter toward the centre. A long rectangular house site (WM017-071001-) is located within. A low roughly oval-shaped mound outside the monument at SSE, which Is of unknown significance. A preservation order was placed on this monument on the 24/04/1987 (SMR File).   Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in low-lying wet pasture with marshy hollows in the vicinity. Within a moated site (WM017-071----) are the grass-covered wall footings of a long rectangular house site (dims. 11.50m NNW-SSE; 5m WSW-ENE) with opposing gaps in the ENE and WNW sides, which may represent the remains of doorways. • WM017-072 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the summit of a broad hill, in undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped enclosure truncated by a trackway and a field boundary at N and E, respectively. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as roughly rectangular-shaped enclosure, indicating that the shape of the enclosure may have been modified between the two editions of the map. Described in 1980 as a roughly rectangular-shaped area (34.5m E-W; 32.5m N-S) enclosed by a bank of earth and stone, with no entrance feature or external fosse visible. The bank is best preserved from NE-S where it has a curvilinear form. It is less substantial where it is linear in form along the W half of the S-side, the W and N sides. There are the remains of internal stone facing at S and SSW. There are a number of disturbance gaps. The interior has an ENE-facing slope and has old cultivation ridges running ENE-WSW. Similar cultivation ridges running NNE-SSW can be seen in the vicinity of the monument to N. An old roadway runs NW-SE outside the bank at NE and a field bank runs N-S, just outside the bank to E.   Description

  Situated at the base of a SSE-facing slope of rising ground, surrounded by low-lying marshy ground in otherwise undulating pasture with restricted views of the surrounding landscape. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 57.5m N-S; 55m E-W) enclosed by a bank. Annotated 'fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a modified, roughly oval-shaped area (approx. dims. 70m N-S; 55m E-W) defined by a scarp. Described in 1986 as a subcircular-shaped area enclosed by an earth and stone bank with an outer fosse with possible causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2m) at W. The bank is best preserved from NNW-N-NNE, is slight from NNE-S and WNW-NNW and is reduced to a scarp from S-W-WNW. The fosse is best preserved from ESE-S-W-N and is infilled from N-E-ESE. The interior has a SSE-facing slope and is crossed by cultivation ridges. The NE quadrant is sectioned off by a low earth and stone bank, having stone facing in places. A low earth and stone bank running initially NE-SW extends from the exterior of the monument at NE. A preservation order was placed on this monument on the 24/04/1987 (SMR File).
