• WM032-079 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on top of a natural rise of ground with excellent views of undulating countryside in all directions. Site consists of a small D-shaped area defined by a much ruined wall of mortared masonry which follows the natural edge of the hillock on which it is situated. The remains of an external batter can be seen at the base of the upstanding wall of the enclosure. The wall is best preserved on the N side, elsewhere it has almost completely reduced to grass covered wall footings. There is a gap (Wth 2.3m) in the wall at NNE. The remains of an avenue leading down the hill from this entrance feature is defined by two slight parallel banks of earth and stone. Adjoining the inside of the N side of the wall are the grass covered stone foundations of a possible structure of unknown significance. The OS memoranda recorded the tradition that in this townland ‘there are the remains of an old castle, which was built by the Brennan family’ (SMR File). It is possible that this monument may be the remains of the ‘old castle’ recorded by the Ordnance Survey. Killinlahan is the adjoining townland to Ballybrennan, however it is possible that this castle was located somewhere else within the adjoining townland of Ballybrennan. • WM032-080 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small rise of ground with good views to the S and W. Site consists of a large oval-shaped area (diam. 48m NNW-SSE; 49m E-W) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank with an external fosse only visible at W and from E-SE. No entrance feature visible. There is a lot of rock outcrop in the centre of the monument. There is a line of flat limestone boulders set on edge running NE from N of centre towards the ENE quadrant, the archaeological significance of this feature is uncertain. The perimeter of the monument has been defaced from N-E by a modern field fence running NW-SE across the NE quadrant of the ringfort. There are no traces of the monument on the NE side of this field fence. Outside the fosse from E-SE there is a small D-shaped area delimited by a low scarp. There is a narrow shallow fosse outside this feature at SW. There is a low scarp running NNE-SSW across the interior of the D-shaped area. The archaeological significance of this D-shaped feature is not clear. It may have been used as a small annexe to the monument or could be a later feature that was added in the post medieval period.
