  Description

  Situated on flat, relatively low-lying ground which has been drained in modern times. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oblong-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 16m N-S; 10m E-W) c. 6m SE of a pond annotated ‘Spring’. Levelled monument described in 1970 as no surface remains visible. • WM020-006 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in relatively low-lying and gently undulating pasture. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 28m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by a scarp and fosse from S-W-N. Monument described in January 1970 as a roughly circular-shaped area defined by a scarp and external fosse. The scarp and fosse have been damaged by digging at SE. Monument described in March 1970 as having recently been levelled. It was then defined as a roughly circular-shaped cropmark (overall diam. 52m) of dark brown earth. Traces of a fosse are evident as a very shallow curvilinear depression (approx. Wth 7m; D 0.2m) from SW-W-N. Monument is not visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM020-027 Burial mound
  Description

  Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 54-5) as following: ‘This and a second barrow (WM020-028----) close by to S, both marked as circular mounds on OS maps, have been destroyed, leaving few traces on the ground. The site was examined by an ASI fieldworker on 11/3/72: Mounds 3 [the present site] and 4 [WM020-028----]. The two mounds marked on the current 6-inch OS map are completely demolished and have left no recognisable trace on the ground. There is a wide scatter of small stones at and around the sites. Mound 3 [was] situated on a natural rise of average pasture. Good views in all directions from the site mound 4 was on the S. slope of the same rise and again its site is marked by a wide circular scatter of small stones. [SMR file] According to the same source, this monument is depicted as ‘a small circular earthwork marked Moat’ on OS Fair Plan from 1830s. This monument and WM020-028----formed part of a cemetery of five barrows spread over three townlands on either side of a stream; they lay on a rise to S of stream, WM020-028---- being on the S slope of the rise facing both the stream and, across it c. 200m to S, a third mound-barrow (WM020-026----) strikingly positioned on a prominent hilltop in Cooksborough townland; also in Cooksborough townland and in the adjoining townland of Cloghanumera, but low down in the stream valley, are two ring-barrows (WM020-142----; WM020-144----)’.   Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 55) as following: ‘This and a second mound-barrow (WM020-027----) close by to N, both marked as circular mounds on OS maps, have been destroyed, leaving few traces on the ground. The site was examined by an ASI fieldworker on 11/3/72: Mounds 3 [WM020-027----] and 4 [the present site].
