• WM024-072 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a very steep hillock with rock outcrop, in pasture with good views to E, S and W. Ringfort (WM024-073----) lies c. 175m to ESE. Monument described in 1971 and 1977 as a high steep-sided oval-shaped platform (overall dims. 27m NW-SE; 18m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank of earth and stone is visible from W-N and has the remains of internal stone facing. It has been reduced to a scarp from N-E-S-W, where some outcrop is visible. A shallow intervening fosse is visible from SW-W-NNW. The outer bank is visible only at W, where it is very denuded. The original entrance is not recognisable. The top of the platform (diam. 13m) is very uneven and a slight flat-topped mound is located in the NW quadrant and appears to be a natural feature. • WM024-073 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM024-072----) lies c. 175m to WNW. Monument described in 1971 and 1977 as an oval-shaped area (30.4m E-W; 26.3m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse with a gap in the bank at W, which may represent the entrance and a narrow gap at S appears to be due to disturbance. The earth and stone bank is substantial although it is reduced to a scarp at E and is slightly defaced in several other places. A modern stone wall running NNW-SSE is built against the base of the bank at W. There are very faint traces of an outer fosse. See attached plan and profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM024-073001 Hut site
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Hut site described in 1971 and 1977 as located in centre of ringfort (WM024-073----). The outline of a large subrectangular-shaped house is visible in the centre. An earthen bank extends from the NW end of the house to the ringfort bank at SW, while a parallel bank extends from the SW corner of the house in the same direction. A short earthen bank (approx. L 4m) extends across the N quadrant from the interior of the bank at N and there is a small triangular platform immediately adjacent to W.   Description

  Situated in a farmyard, on the shoulder of a steep hill marked by an OS trig. point (513m OD), in pasture. Ringfort (WM024-073----) lies c. 230m to WSW. Annotated 'Fort' and depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular-shaped earthwork outlined by a scarp. Farm buildings depicted at this location on the revised ed. OS 6-inch map.   Description

  Situated on the shoulder of a hill, overlooking the valley of a stream to SW, on Lunestown Demesne. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a standing stone. Levelled monument described in 1981 as no surface remains visible. However a large stone appears to be visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. • WM024-172 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views to S, incorporated into a woodland plantation on the estate lands of Lunestown Demesne. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Monument described in 1971 as a roughly circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank best preserved at S and almost reduced to a scarp (H 1.7m) elsewhere. The scarp may have been modified during tree planting. There is no fosse or entrance visible. The interior has a slight N-facing slope and has low banks and humps of earth and stone which may be a result of tree planting. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.
