  Description

  Situated on the SE facing slope of a high hill in grassland, with good views of the surrounding hilly countryside. A circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 23m NW-SE) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 4m; H 1.5m at SE) and a wide deep external fosse. The perimeter has been quarried away from NNE-ESE. The interior slopes gently from SW-SE. A field fence running NE-SW, depicted as a roadway on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, intersects the monument at NW. The enclosing element of the ringfort seems to have been mainly levelled since last site inspection, and is now visible as a crop mark on the Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. On this aerial photograph the only upstanding section of the enclosing bank is visible at SW. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM012-041 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a SE sloping ridge in grassland with good views from S-W. Ringfort (WM012-056---) 160m to NE. A large circular shaped raised area (approx. diam. 45m N-S; 48m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank and shallow external fosse with causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2.3m) at SE. The enclosing bank is best preserved from NE-E, elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp. From SE-S-WSW it has been incorporated into a field fence. The interior slopes generally from NW-SE, and contains faint traces of NE-SW running cultivation ridges. Digital Globe aerial photograph of the monument taken November 2011 indicates that enclosing bank now only survives from SSE-S-W, elsewhere it has been levelled.   Description

  Situated on SE facing slope of a prominent hill in grassland, with good views of the surrounding countryside. Ringfort (WM012-041---) 160m to SW, ringfort (WM012-057---) 130m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS Fair Plan map as an oval-shaped enclosure annotated as a ‘fort’ with a gravel pit in the S half of the interior. This site has been levelled and is not visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Upstanding monument described in 1975 as a sub-oval shaped area (approx. diam. 26m N-S; 24m E-W) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a U-shaped external fosse. The bank is fragmentary and is best preserved from NNW-E-ESE and at WSW. There is a possible entrance gap at SE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNE-SSW across the interior, which slopes gently from E-W. The perimeter and much of the interior has been quarried away, and several banks, probably related to the quarrying are visible in the interior of the monument.   Description

  Situated on S facing slope of steep summit, with good views of the surrounding gently undulating countryside. Ringfort (WM012-057---) 130m to NW, ringfort (WM012-058---) 135m to ESE. No surface remains visible of levelled monument on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Upstanding monument described in 1975 as a large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 36m N-S; 39m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is fragmentary and best preserved from NW-N (H 1m). The fosse has been infilled in several places and the outer bank is low and only visible from NW-N. The interior slopes slightly to NE. The perimeter has been quarried away at SE. A modern field fence running N-S intersects the E side of the monument. • WM012-058 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the summit, of a steep hill with extensive views in all directions. Ringfort (WM012-058---) 135m to WNW. A large sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 38m NW-SE) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is poorly preserved and has several disturbance gaps, the fosse is steep and flat-bottomed and the outer bank is little more than a poorly preserved counter-scarp bank. There is an entrance gap in the inner bank at SE (Wth 2.8m) and causeway (Wth 3m; H 0.3m) across the fosse. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running across the interior from E-W. A field fence running NW-SE intersects the perimeter of the monument at NE. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, on L-shaped plan with two-storey return to rear (southwest). Hipped natural slate roof having two cut stone chimneystacks to centre. Lime rendered walls with ivy covering. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows. Central round-headed doorcase having cut stone block-and-start surround with replacement timber door and a spider's web fanlight over. Set back from road in mature grounds with garden to front (north) and complex of rubble limestone outbuildings on L-shaped plan, built c.1860, to rear (south). Bounded on road-frontage (north) by coursed limestone wall with gateway, comprising two cut stone gate piers (on square plan) with water-shaped/weathered limestone copping over and a pair of cast-iron gates. Located to the west of Crookedwood.
