  Description

  On a natural low hillock in pasture. No surface remains visible of castle site that is located in a field known locally as 'Castle Hill' (SMR File) just N of the village of Milltownpass. Depicted as 'Site of Castle' on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Marked as 'Site of Old Castle' on the OS Fair Plan parish map of the Pass of Kilbride (SMR File). A tower house type castle at ‘Miltowne’ is depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fartullagh Barony (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of the Down Survey parish map of the Pass of Kilbride states that ‘upon Miltowne Stands a Castle’ (ibid.). On this map the lands and castle of Milltown belonged to William Bremingham [Bermingham] an Irish papist and owner of the adjacent townland of Corcloon in 1640. After the Irish Confederate Wars of 1641-53 the forfeited lands of William Bermingham were granted to Nathaniel Micklethwaite who is listed as the Protestant owner of these lands in 1670.   Description

  Depicted as a square-shaped earthwork similar to a moated site on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and outlined as a small square-shaped field (dims. c. 34m N-S; 32m E-W) on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Visible as a cropmark on the 2005 OSI aerial photograph. This monument was located in a different location on the Record of Monuments and Places [RMP] map for Co. Westmeath (1997) where it is shown to be located three fields to the E. However there is no cartrographic evidence or any visible cropmark on aerial photographs to suggest that there was ever a monument at this location. There is no paper file and it is possible that the location of the moument is incorrect on the RMP map. This RMP number possibly relates to the possible moated site depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map which was not marked as a monument on the published RMP map for Co. Westmeath in 1997. Visible as a cropmark on Bing Maps aerial photograph taken between 06-07 November 2011. • WM033-037 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a slight rise of ground in gently undulating pasture land. Gallstown House located 890m to the NW. Levelled monument visible on the ground as a cropmark (Wth 3m) of differential vegetation growth defining a roughly circular area (diam. c. 41m N-S; 39.2m E-W). A slight depression visible from S-W marks the outline of the levelled fosse. No other features visible. Recorded as a ringfort in 1956 when it was described as a small ringfort that was possibly modified as a tree-ring due to the presence of tree-stumps along the bank of the ringfort. The ringfort consisted of a circular area (diam. 38m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1m) only visible at N, elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp and outer fosse (Wth 2.4m; ext. D 0.7m) (SMR File). Marked as a ‘Fort’ on the OS Fair Plan parish map of Pass of Kilbride (SMR File). Depicted as an antiquity on the 1818 townland map of Milltown (Boyd Belvedere Maps, WCL/M/BBE/22). Visible as a cropmark on Bing Maps aerial photograph taken between 06-07 November 2011.   Description

  Attached four-bay two-storey house, built or rebuilt c.1830, having a single-bay extension with a hipped natural slate roof over to the southwest gable end adjoining Grennan's Public House (15403329). Pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and two rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast lime rendered walls over projecting plinth. Square-headed window openings having cut stone sills, rendered surrounds and replacement windows. Round-headed cut stone blocked architraved doorcase with fluted keystone and having an early timber panelled door with a plain fanlight over. Square-headed doorcase to the extension to the southwest end having a glazed timber door. Set back from road with a low rendered plinth wall to the road-frontage having iron railings over. Cast-iron gateposts and iron pedestrian gates to the front of main doorcase and doorcase to extension. Located in the centre of Milltownpass village.

  Description

  Semi-detached four-bay two-storey house, built c.1830. Hipped and sprocketed artificial slate roof having a single rendered chimneystack (offset) to the centre. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with replacement timber casement windows. Round-headed doorcase (offset to the east side of centre) having a cut stone block-and-start surround with projecting keystone over and with a timber panelled door having a radial/spoke fanlight over. Road-fronted to the east end of Milltownpass village.

  Description

  Freestanding limestone milestone on triangular plan having pyramidal top, erected c.1780. Benchmark incised to top, c.1830. Located adjacent to main Dublin-Galway road between the village of Milltownpass and Rochfortbridge.

• Farm house, 1840–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey thatched house, built c.1850 with flat roof extension to rear (south) and a single-bay flat-roofed entrance porch (offset) to the centre of the main façade (north). Pitched thatched roof with decorative ropework to the ridge and two rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered finish over rubble stone construction. Slight batter to base of walls. Porch constructed of brick. Irregularly-placed square-headed window openings with stone sills and replacement windows. Square-headed doorcase to the front face of the projecting porch with replacement door. Set back from road at a right angle to the road alignment. Modern boundary wall and gate to the west and a complex of random rubble single-storey outbuildings with pitched corrugated metal roofs to the north and south. Located to the southwest of Kinnegad and to the south of the Pass of Kilbride.
