• WM001-008 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hillock with excellent views to W, N and NE, overlooked by Tully Hill to S. Mullaghmeen visible to E and Lough Sheelin visible to N. Ringfort (WM001-009---) located 140m to NE. No surface remains visible of levelled ringfort depicted on all editions of the OS 6-inch maps as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 36m N-S; 29m E-W). • WM001-009 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a natural rise of ground with good views in all direction. Ringfort (WM001-011----) located 260m to NE, ringfort (WM001-010----) 160m to SSE, and levelled ringfort (WM001-008---) 120m to SSW. Bi-vallate ringfort consisting of a circular area (diam. 31m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank mainly reduced to a scarp and shallow fosse with flat-topped broad external bank with traces of an outer fosse visible at NNW and E. A gap (Wth 1.5-5.6m) at SE probably represents the original entrance feature. The interior is quite uneven rising from the perimeter to the centre. Some large stones protrude from the centre of the site which probably represents natural rock outcrop although it may represent the remains of a possible house site. • WM001-010 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on NE facing slope of small hillock with excellent views to W, N & E. Ringfort (WM001-009----) 160m to NW and large ringfort (WM001-011---) 260m to N. Roughly circular area (diam. 40.5m NE-SW; 36m SE-NW) enclosed by a wide well preserved earth and stone bank with faint traces of an external fosse at W only. Perimeter of monument is intersected at SW by a post-1700 field boundary running NW-SE. No clear entrance feature visible, two breaks in the bank at NW but it not possible to know if one of these represents the original entrance. The surface of the interior is uneven and dips appreciably towards the perimeter on the NW and SE. The external face of the enclosing bank is faced with stone of post-1700 date from SW-W-N where it now forms part of a field boundary. There is a slight depression of unknown significance, but possibly modern disturbance near the centre. The interior has traces of post-1700 cultivation ridges running SW-NE. • WM001-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the SE facing slope near top of a hill with excellent views to the NW, N & NE. Monument overlooked by Mullaghmeen Hill to the ESE. Ringforts (WM001-010----; WM001-009----) 250m and 260m to S and SW respectively. Roughly circular area (diam. 26m E-W; 27m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank poorly preserved from NW-N-E-SE with slight traces of an external fosse. No entrance feature visible. The S quadrant of the ringfort interior is best preserved area. Post 1700 field boundary running N-S intersects W side of site. Second field boundary running N-S also intersects perimeter of monument E side. The interior of the ringfort slopes from W-E. The S perimeter of the monument is intersected by a stone wall & shallow fosse which forms part of a post-1700 field boundary. The ringfort appears to have enclosed on all sides by a earth and stone field boundary wall of probable post-1700 date. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.
