• WM003-012 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on SE facing slope of rising ground just below summit of prominent hillock with excellent views to the SE & SW. Old laneway 25m to N as shown on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Circular area (approx. diam. 27m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank, with traces of an external fosse. Entrance gap (Wth 1.7m) at ESE, several modern gaps in bank elsewhere. Two large stones on SW side of entrance gap appear to represent stone facing of the entrance. Evidence for external and internal drystone stone facing of enclosing bank. A sub-circular depression in the WNW quadrant appears to be due to quarrying and a grass covered mound along its upper edge appears to be upcast. No surface remains visible of souterrain in ringfort. According to local tradition there was a 'cave' inside the ringfort. The interior slopes from NW-SE. Post-1700 field boundaries intersect the perimeter of the monument at N and SW as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Frank Coyne & Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 20 December 2016

  Description

  No surface remains visible of an isolated possible souterrain in the area marked on the OS 6-inch map. • Ballycomoyle National School, school, 1920–1940 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached T-plan gable-fronted four-bay single-storey school, built c.1930. Currently unoccupied and out of use. Pitched slate roofs with overhanging eaves, brick chimneystacks, clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods and a cast-iron roof vent. Smooth cement rendered walls with cut stone name plaque to front gable (south). Square-headed openings with six-over-nine and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to front. Square-headed door openings with timber sheeted doors. Set back from road in own grounds with random rubble stone boundary wall to perimeter (south). Located in the rural countryside to the north of Castlepollard.
