• WM023-079 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the summit of a high ridge, in pasture, with commanding views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 and 1976 as a large circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank, a counterscarp embankment, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank of earth and stone is set on a counterscarp embankment from NE-E-S-W. There is a well-defined intervening fosse which is enclosed on the exterior by a modern wall from SE-S-W. The remains of an outer bank are visible from W-N-E-SE and it has been reused as a townland boundary from SE-S-W. There is a well-preserved entrance gap and a corresponding causeway at SE. The interior has a N-facing slope and is uneven with natural rises. A house site (WM023-079001-) is visible in E quadrant, irregular-shaped depressions to the immediate W and N are of unknown significance.   Description

  Situated at the N edge of a ridge with wide views to NW, N, E and S. Monument described in 1977 as a circular-shaped area (diam. 33m) defined by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank with entrance gap (Wth 2.6m) at ESE. The inner bank of earth and stone is set on a steep counterscarp embankment from N-NW-NE. The intervening fosse is best preserved from E-S-W. The outer bank is reasonably well-preserved and is visible from SE-S-W. Field banks cut into the perimeter of the site, where they have disturbed the outer bank at E, SW and W. • WM024-131 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in low-lying marshy land, overlooked by higher ground in all directions. Depicted on Boyd Belvedere Estate Map of 1818 as a circular-shaped area defined by a perforated line. Depicted on 1837 OS 6-inch map as a large circular-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 75m E-W; 73m N-S) enclosed by a wide bank. Monument described in 1971 as a very large, irregular-shaped earthwork enclosed by a bank and external fosse with no clear entrance feature visible. The earthen bank is steep and well preserved, except where it is reduced to a scarp at NE and has been disturbed by gaps elsewhere. The slight remains of an outer fosse are best preserved at SW. • WM024-135 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a level area, on a NW-facing slope of a prominent hill, in pasture, with good views to SW, NW and NE. Monument described in the 1970s as a roughly oval-shaped area (dims. 33.7m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The monument has been truncated across the E sector by a field boundary running NNE-SSW. There is a slight trace of a levelled inner bank from NE-E-SSE on the opposite side of the field boundary. The remains of the inner bank are only visible from SSE-W-N-NE. An intervening fosse and an earth and stone outer bank are visible from SW-WSW. The original entrance is not visible. The interior is uneven and has a gentle W-facing slope with rocky outcrop visible. A flat-topped, steep-sided bank running NE-SW across the perimeter at S extends 11m into the interior. • WM024-136 Children's burial ground
  Description

  On slight rise of rock outcrop with good views in all directions. Depicted as a sub-rectangular shaped area that is annotated as ‘Old Burial Ground’ on the 1818 Boyd Belvedere Maps (WCL/M/BBE/10). Present remains consist of an area of rock outcrop with some loose stones lying scattered around the surface of the ground that is enclosed by a low earth and stone bank. Sections of the natural rock outcrop appears to have been scarped and some of the loose stones appear to represent some modification of the natural rock outcrop. Area of burial ground is visible on 2005 OSI aerial photos and on Bing Maps aerial photograph taken between 06/07 November 2011. May be the remains of a children's burial ground described in 1937 as following; 'In a place called Rahan [Raheen], about one mile north of Moyvoughly, is a small, rocky, track of land called "Dun na leanb", and it is said to have been once used as a burial place for unbaptized infants. As far as can be remembered the last corpse was laid there about the year 1880. All that is now to be seen, are some craggy stones which were probably used as head-stones' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0745, Page 115).   Description

  Situated on a low rise, in pasture, with a large subcircular-shaped pond c. 70m to ESE. Depicted as an earthwork on Larkin’s 1808 Map of Co. Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580). Not depicted on the 1837 ed.   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1870, having two single-bay gable-fronted porches to the northwest facing elevation, added c.1920. Shop to north eastern end. Extension to the rear (southeast). Hipped natural slate roof having two rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched corrugated metal roofs with bargeboards to projecting porches. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with rendered bands to corners. Square-headed window openings with patent reveals, painted cut stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Single segmental-headed window opening front face of porch to the northeast end (shop) having fixed three-pane timber window. Square-headed entrance to porch to the northeast end (shop) having modern panelled timber door. Segmental-headed doorcase to porch to the southwest having a timber panelled door entrance to accommodation has timber panelled door flanked by and sidelights. Early timber shelving to shop interior. Heavy timber internal door to shop may be original front door to structure, prior to porches being added. Located at the corner of a rural road junction to the south of Ballymore.

  Description

  Entrance gateway, erected c.1875, comprising a pair of cut limestone gate posts, square in plan with pyramidal-shaped heads, supporting a pair of wrought-iron bar gates. Located to the south of Ballymore forming entrance to a modernised two-storey vernacular house, built c.1875.
