- WM011-045 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight natural rise, surrounded by low lying land to SW & N, with good views from S-W-NW. The gently undulating grass-land which surrounds the site rises gently to the N, NE & E. St. Bigseach's Well (WM011-047----) 200m to NNE, mound barrow (WM011-046----) 30m to ENE and ringfort (WM011-048----) 275m to SE. The stream which marks the townland boundary with Kilbixy is 45m to NW. A small clustered settlement annotated as 'Clontane' on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map lies 180m to SW. A natural rise that has been enhanced to produce an oval-shaped raised area (approx. diam. 44m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by a two substantial earthen banks and intervening fosse with a slight external fosse. The inner bank is visible from SE-S-W and is levelled elsewhere. The inner fosse has been filled in at WSW. The outer bank has been steepened from N-SE, and is almost completely levelled from E-ESE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running roughly E-W across the interior of the monument. A large stone is visible jutting through the surface of the ground near the centre of the interior, and two other flat stones lie on the surface nearby. - WM011-046 Barrow - mound barrow
Description
Situated midway along the top of a low natural ridge running NNE-SSW in low lying marshy pasture. Ringfort (WM011-045----) located 30m to W. Possible partially natural glacial hillock that has been scarped or modified to produce a roughly oval-shaped round-topped mound (diam. 20m) of earth and stones with no visible trace of an external fosse. Partial damage to mound at ENE possibly the result of quarrying which has produced a steep scarp running N-S with some large flag stones visible (SMR Files 17/10/1972; 28/08/1973). Description
Attached two-storey former corn mill complex on L-shaped plan, built c.1820. Now derelict and in use as domestic/agricultural outbuildings. Pitched and gabled roofs with combination of corrugated-iron and natural slate roof covering. Cast-iron rainwater goods throughout. Constructed of rubble stone with stone quoins to a number of the corners. Combination of irregularly spaced square-headed and shallow segmental-headed window openings, some with red brick surrounds and a number with surviving cut stone sills. Window openings now mostly contain battened timber shutters. Combination of square-headed and segmental-headed door openings with timber sheeted or corrugated-iron doors. Square-headed loading bays at first floor level to entrance facades (southwest). Loading ramp to southwest corner gives access to first floor loading bay. Set back from road to rear of farmhouse. Building abutted by numerous sheds of varying dates. Possible remains of corn drying kilns to southeast.
