• WM006-076 Water mill - unclassified
  Description

  In 1682 Sir Henry Piers of Tristernagh described the route of the River Gaine and the mills and bridges along its route. He wrote the following about the bridge (WM007-123----) at Multyfarnham; 'it passeth to Multifornan, where it falleth under another large bridge; thence to a mill, whence immediately it watereth the ground of the late Friery of Multifernan (WM006-058----)' (Vallancey 1786, 6). The 'Corn Mill' depicted standing on the banks of the River Gaine on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map may have been built on site of or in close proximity to the medieval mill of Multyfarnham. • WM011-030 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent steep hill surrounded by gently undulating grassland, with good views of the surrounding hills. The road which marks the townland boundary with Ballindurrow is 160m to S. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 24m NNW-SSE) enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank. The bank has several disturbance gaps. A roughly circular-shaped raised area is visible in the S quadrant and may be the remains of a hut site (WM011-030001-). There are other raised areas in the interior, but these have been cut by cultivation ridges running N-S, and their function is unclear. A circular raised area in the NE is also visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. A field fence running N-S intersects the perimeter of the monument at E.   Description

  Situated on top of a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland with good views all around. Ringfort (WM011-033----) 160m to NE. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 32m N-S) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank with a slight external fosse. The bank has several disturbance gaps, and the fosse is almost completely filled up. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NE-SW across the interior of the monument. A post 1837 field fence runs NW-SE immediately outside the SW side of the site. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM011-032 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  The precise location of 'Rathganey Castle' has not been identified. This castle belonging to Andrew Nugent an 'Irish papist' was depicted on the 1654-9 Down Survey map of Multyfarnham parish (NLI, MS 723-4). The castle is not depicted on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. The terrier of the Down Survey map of Multyfarnham parish stated that there was in the parish 'the castles of Multifernan Rathgany & Moninstowne' (ibid.). An area marked on the RMP map of Co. Westmeath was inspected but no surface remains of any castle were identified at this location. Close to this location there are the remains of a roughly rectangular-shaped earthwork visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011 which may mark the site of this castle. The castle is depicted on the Down Survey map as located W of the church (WM006-061----) of Multyfarnham in the area that roughly corresponds with ringfort (WM011-030---) and the rectangular-shaped earthwork visible on the Digital Globe aerial photograph. • WM011-033 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on gentle NW facing slope of rising ground with good views to the N. Ringfort (WM011-031----) 160m to SW. A sub-oval shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank and wide shallow external fosse with possible entrance gap (Wth 2.9m) at SE. The bank is best preserved from N-E & at WSW. Elsewhere, the bank is fragmentary and levelled in places. The fosse is visible at E. The perimeter of the monument has been quarried away at NE. The interior has a general slight slope from SW-NE and has vague traces of cultivation ridges running across the interior from NE-SW. A roadway intersects the site from E-S, and a field fence running NW-SE intersects the perimeter from S-WSW. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.
