• WM020-133 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in flat, relatively low-lying pasture and tillage. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1970 as a circular-shaped cropmark (diam. 47m) visible in tillage as a broad ring of dark brown gravelly soil in contrast to the surrounding field and assumed to be the backfilled fosse. This is further defined on the inner edge by a low, very smooth scarp from SSW-W-N-NNE. Monument is visible today as a circular-shaped cropmark now in pasture, on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM020-135 Cross - Wayside cross
  Description

  One of three wayside crosses (WM020-135001/002-) of which only this one is in its original location. The location of this cross is marked on the first and current editions of the OS 6-inch map. Described in 1976 as 'Hughes 1601. This cross is in situ. The shaft is set on a large crude base with slab for 'coffin laying' in front and another plain coffin slab to right.' (ASI Survey files 1976). A second report from 1998 described this cross as 'A shaft (H 1.43m; Wth 0.26m ; T 0.23m) with moulded angles. There is an inscription in false relief, read vertically on each of the E & W faces i.e. the broad faces. The top of the shaft is broken, truncating the inscription On top is a broken down sub-rectangular mortise (dims. 0.19m by 0.1m; D 0.06m). The lettering of the inscription is well preserved & quite easy to read. The inscription is read from bottom to top.The shaft is inserted in a modern rubble stone base. Inscription on E face (all Capitals) reads 'GOOD CHRISTIAN PRAY FOR T SOULE OF JOHN O MLAGHLIN WH DECEASED THE 14 DAY OF AUGUST 16' Inscription on W face reads 'AND FOR JOVAN HUGHES HIS WIFE DEPARTED THE 13 OF SEPTEMBE' (ASI Survey file 1998). his cross was erected to the memory of John McLoghlin and his wife Jovan Hughes who were killed by a runaway horse in 1601. In the past funerals passing halted here and placed the coffin on the flat stone beside the crosses. The people knelt and prayed for the souls of those commemorated.

• WM020-135001 Cross - Wayside cross (present location)
  Description

  One of three wayside crosses (WM020-135002-) of which only one (WM020-135----) is in its original location. The original location of this cross is marked on the first and current editions of the OS 6-inch map in the square at the top of Killucan village. The cross was moved from the village to its current location. Described in 1976 as 'Darcy 1604 with Latin inscription, shaft grooved and now dislodged and broken. Squared base.' (ASI Survey files 1976). A second report from 1998 described this cross as 'A cross shaft consisting of two stones, inserted in a boulder, which may be the original base, but cannot be certain. The lower stone (H 0.58m ; 0.27m x 0.27m) is grooved along the edges vertically. The stone cement bonded to the top of the lower stone is square sectioned (H 0.43m; Wth 0.26m ; T 0.26m) . On the top of the surface of this stone is a coating of copper with fragment of slate embedded, and there is an iron pin (dims. 0.08m; H 0.02m) projecting upwards. No trace of the inscription described in 1976 can now be deciphered.' (ASI Survey file 1998). This cross commemorates Arthur Darcy and his wife who died in 1604.

• WM020-135002 Cross - Wayside cross (present location)
  Description

  One of three wayside crosses (WM020-135001-) of which only one (WM020-135----) is in its original location. The original location of this cross from the townland of Crossanstown (WM027-073) where it was located beside the old Dublin Athlone mail road. The cross was moved from this townland to its current location prior to 1976. Described in 1976 as 'Plunkett 1531. The shaft is set in a large socketed circular stone (millstone?). Found at Crossanstown.' (ASI Survey files 1976). A second report from 1998 described this cross as 'A cross shaft (H 1.38m; Wth 0.28m; T 0.23m) with chamfered angles; set in an oval arrangement of stones, which I doubt represents a broken millstone. The top of the shaft steps inwards. On the WSW (broad) face is an inscription in false relief which is lichen covered and difficult to make out without a rubbing.' (ASI Survey file 1998). This cross commemorates Tiriogh McKenny and his wife Alison Plunkett who died in a coaching accident in 1531.

  Description

  Gateway, erected c.1880, comprising a pair of cast-iron gate posts on octagonal plan with ball finials over supporting a pair of wrought-iron flat-bar gates. Rubble limestone boundary walls run away to the north and the south. Located to the southwest of Killucan/Rathwire at the entrance to a pair of mid-to-late-nineteenth century houses.

  Description

  Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1885, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with fluted head having fluted spout, ‘cow tail’ curvilinear handle, and with a fluted ogee-dome cap with finial over. Set in rubble limestone enclosure, open to road to the north, with cut stone slab to the front (north) with a carved drainage groove. Located adjacent to road junction at the west end of main street running through Rathwire village.

  Description

  Terraced three-bay single-storey house, built c.1880, now disused. Pitched natural slate roof with overhanging eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and a central (offset to the east) rendered chimneystack. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with brick dressings to the openings, flush brick quoins to the corners and a flush brick string course at window lintel level. Square-headed window openings with granite sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Central square-headed doorcase retaining early timber panelled door. Road-fronted towards the west end of the main street running through Rathwire village.

• Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1830–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Roman Catholic church on cruciform plan, built c.1830, comprising a four-bay nave to the east, two-bay transepts to the north and south and a shallow chancel to the west. Church ‘repaired’ and altered c.1866. Extension to rear (west) of north transept. Three-stage Italianate tower/campanile (on square-plan) added to the east gable end, dated 1870. Pitched artificial slate roofs with overhanging eaves to main body of church. Cast-iron cross finial to the apex of gable to north transept. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with flushed dressed limestone quoins to the corners. Tower/campanile constructed of dressed limestone with extensive ashlar trim, including a projecting string course between each stage and a heavy bracketed cornice over belfry. Pointed-arched window openings to the nave and transepts, having chamfered ashlar limestone surrounds, chamfered ashlar limestone sills and modern stained glass windows (originally Gothic sash windows). Three cusped lancet openings to the chancel gable. Pointed-arched doorcase to the north face of tower/campanile, having flush dressed limestone surrounds and replacement timber sheeted doors. Semi-circular window over doorcase with cut stone date plaque above, all set in round-headed recess. Round-headed window opening to each face of tower at second stage level, set in round-headed recesses with a string course at springing point of arch. Three open round-headed arches to each face at belfry level having timber louvered vents and a projecting string course at springing point of arches. Small cupola over belfry level. Set back from road to the south side of the main street running through Rathwire village with rubble stone plinth wall with mild steel railings over to road-frontage (north).

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c 1820, having two-bay two-storey stores/retail outlet attached to the west end, continuing the roofline. Single-storey outbuilding attached to the west gable end. Pitched natural slate roof having a projecting smooth rendered eaves course and a rendered chimneystack with terracotta pots to either end of house. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course with rendered bands to the corners. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals, stone sills and having six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor openings and six-over-three pane timber sliding sash windows over to the first floor openings. Central square-headed doorcase to house having a timber panelled door. Shopfront to the west end of structure having a square-headed doorcase flanked to the west by a square-headed window opening, now boarded-up. Set back from road towards the centre of Rathwire village with rendered boundary wall and rendered gate piers supporting wrought-iron gates to the north.

  Description

  Detached multiple-bay single-storey school, built c.1955, having a flat-roofed block running along the length of the building to the entrance front (north) and single-storey wings with canopied entrances and toilet blocks flanking main block to either side (east and west). Water tower on square-plan attached to the east end and a single-storey extension to the rear (running north to south). Pitched tiled roof with overhanging eaves and a pair of rendered chimneystacks to the main body of building. Flat roof to side wings and a shallow pitched roof over the water tower. Pebbledash walls over smooth rendered plinth to main body of building with banded block detailing to side wings. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals, painted stone or concrete sills and a variety of window types - timber sliding sash, metal casement and uPVC. Square-headed door openings with timber doors to side wings having concrete canopies over. Set back from road in extensive grounds to the east side of Rathwire. Rendered boundary wall and mild steel entrance gates to the road-frontage.

  Graveyard on rectilinear plan, originally laid out c.1870, having collection of gravestone markers from c.1870 to the present day. Still in use. Bounded by rendered boundary wall to the north and by mature trees/hedges to other sides. Main entrance to the north having a pair of rendered gate piers (on square-plan with decorative capstones over) supporting a pair wrought-iron gates with cross finials over. Located to the east end of Rathwire village.

  Detached three-bay two-storey Roman Catholic parochial house, built c.1890, having an advanced gable-fronted breakfront to the centre of the main façade (south) and two-storey returns to the rear (north). Hipped natural slate roof, pitched over breakfront, having cast-iron rainwater goods and a central pair of rendered chimneystacks. Decorative pierced timber barge boards to gable-fronted bay and a wrought-iron cross finial over to roof apex. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course with raised cut stone quoins to the corners. Projecting string course at first floor sill level and at lintel level to ground floor window openings (curved). Square-headed window openings to main body of building with cut stone sills, decorative rendered surrounds and replacement windows. Pointed-arched doorcase to front face of projecting breakfront (south) having moulded red brick surrounds and a timber panelled door. Pointed-arched window opening over having moulded red brick surround containing a Gothic window with Geometric tracery (comprising a pair of cusp-headed windows with a cinquefoil opening over) and stained glass. Set back from road in own grounds to the east side of Rathwire. Complex of single-storey outbuildings to the rear (north) having pitched natural slate and corrugated metal roofs, rendered walls and square-headed openings retaining timber sash windows and timber doors. Vernacular gate piers and wrought-iron bar gates to rear (north), giving access to field. Rubble limestone boundary walls to road frontage. Main entrance gates to the west, comprising a pair of openwork decorative cast-iron gate piers having cast-iron double gates. Gateway flanked to the north and the south by a low plinth wall having cast-iron railings over.

  Single-arched road bridge over Riverstown River, built c.1800. Constructed using rubble limestone with roughly dressed limestone voussoirs to the arch. Rubble limestone coping over parapets. Cast-iron ties to sides of bridge. Water channel now cement rendered. Located to the southwest of Killucan/Rathwire.
