• WM021-013 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in fairly level pasture, with extensive views in all directions. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subcircular-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1970 as a much disturbed roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 35m E-W; 33m N-S) enclosed by a low scarp that has been modified when incorporated into a modern field fence at SW. A field fence is visible at the base of the scarp from ESE-SSE. There is no visible trace of an external fosse or entrance feature. The interior has a gentle SW-facing slope and several slight depressions which are due to modern disturbance. Monument described in 1980 as completely levelled except for a slight rise of ground defined by vague traces of a low, scarp visible from N-E. Levelled monument is visible today as a faint roughly oval-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Located on flat level pasture with good views in all directions. N bank of the River Deel located 40m to the S and Inan Bridge located 90m to the SW. Not depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. On this map the possible monument is depicted as a roughly D-shaped well drained area that is defined by a dotted outline situated on the flat flooplains of the River Deel. This feature is depicted as an area of dry ground surrounded by wet poorly drained land. A similar area of dry ground (WM028-002----) is depicted 840m to the W also located on the floodplains N of the River Deel. Depicted as an antiquity on the OS Fair Plan map where it is annotated as a 'Fort'. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map a pathway is depicted running onto the dry ground from the road to the W. Depicted as a 'Danish Fort' on Larkin's 1808 map of County Westmeath (SMR File). Possible monument consists of a large oval shaped area (dims. 80m NE-SW; 66m NW-SE) defined by a low poorly preserved earthen bank mainly reduced to a scarp with outer fosse and remains of an external bank. No entrance feature visible. The inner bank is only visible from NNE-E-ESE. The external bank is only visible from SW-W-NNW. The fosse is not visible SE-S-SW. A quarry hole has damaged the scarp from SW-W. Old pathway leading onto monument interior visible to W. Remains of cultivation ridges running NE-SW across the interior are visible. The remains of a sub-rectangular shaped annexe can be seen on the E side of the earthwork. The annexe consists of a sub-rectangular shaped area (dims. c. 24.5m N-S; 37m E-W) defined by a scarp and a narrow shallow fosse only visible from N-E, no entrance feature visible. This annexe appears to a be a later feature possibly of post-1700 date that was added onto the E side of the earthwork. • WM028-002 Earthwork
  Description

  The SMR File states that there is an ‘Earthwork shown’ on William Larkin’s map of County Westmeath dating from 1808 (NLI Ms. 46, 580). The SMR file frecords these earthworks as ‘Site of’ which suggests that there were no surface remains visible at the time when the nearby monument WM028-001--- was surveyed in 1980 (SMR File). An archaeological assessment report carried out in 2004 (Elder & O’Carroll 2004, 2) recorded that a ‘development is centred [NGR 262500/250240] on an irregular-shaped raised platform. Much of the central portion has already been quarried to a depth of up to 2m below present ground level, and an access road constructed from an existing field entrance to the northwest’. This assessment report (Elder and O’Carroll 2004, 3) records that according to ‘the landowner the area to the immediate west of the gravel pit had been extensively landscaped in the late 1960s/early 1970s upon receipt of a grant for reclamation of the land. Prior to these works, a series of linear ‘bumps’ were noted, which from their description appear to have been evidence of medieval ‘ridge-and-furrow’ ploughing. An archaeologist was apparently contacted at the time, and maps consulted, but as no earthworks were marked, it was assumed safe to proceed (Farrelly, pers. comm.). On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map a natural dry hillock is depicted on the floodplains of the River Deel located immediately to the S. On this map the natural island of dry land is accessed via a small laneway which crosses over wet land where a ‘Wooden Br.’ is depicted on this map. No antiquity is depicted on this island on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. According to the Archaeological Assessment Report (Elder and O’Carroll 2004, 4), this island ‘surrounded by marshland to the north, east and west, and the river to the south, would have proven an ideal location for a defendable settlement of the early medieval, or even prehistoric period’. A site visit in 2004 recorded that ‘there has been a significant change in the overall height of the land in the vicinity of the recorded monument. The landowner mentioned improvement works being carried out a few decades previously, but it also appeared as though work had been undertaken in the more recent past, relating to quarrying operations. There were no obvious earthworks to suggest the location of the monument, but that does not exclude the possibility of surviving sub-surface features, deposits and/or artefacts’ (Elder and O’Carroll 2004, 5).
