- WM003-043 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a natural rise of ground with good views to NE, E and SW. Large oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 79m NW-SE; 53m NE-SW) enclosed by a well preserved substantial earth and stone bank (Wth 3-5m; int. H 1.5-2m), with wide deep fosse and the remains of an external bank only visible from N-E-S. Causewayed entrance (Wth 3.8m) at W. The external bank appears to be the remains of a post-1700 field boundary as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. The interior of the ringfort has old cultivation ridges running NE-SW through it. - WM003-044 Cross - Wayside cross
Description
Recorded by the OS in 1874 as 'A portion of a cross is standing on a fence' (OS Field Name Book 1874, 14). Drawn by Du Noyer (George Victor Du Noyer, “Calvary Cross. Cross on bye road Td. Of Robinstown Upper. Sheet 3/2 Co. W. Meath. Near Castlepollard,” Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, accessed January 24, 2020, http://rsai.locloudhosting.net/items/show/23521) in the 19th century and described in 1928 as 'The fragments of a plain cross with solid ring and chamfered edges. The head is 2ft. (0.6m) across the arms, the shaft is 3ft. (0.3m) in length, and the socket stone is 1ft. 9in. (0.52m) by 1ft. 7in. (0.47m). The pieces are lying in a field close to the angle of a lane one third of a mile (500m) N.W. of Rathgarve Church (WM003-068----)' (Crawford 1928, 58, no. 5). Described in 1980 as 'The cross is now in 3 fragments (1) the base and the lower portion of the shaft (Wth 0.33m; H 0.5m; T 0.17m); (2) another portion of the shaft (L 0.4m) (3) the head (Wth 0.53m; H 0.57m). These 3 fragments would appear to represent the entire cross, there does not appear to be any pieces missing but without assistance to attempt a reconstruction I cannot be absolutely certain of this. The base (dims. 0.52m x 0.44m; H 0.25m) and the 2 fragments of the shaft lie in the laneway just S of the junction shown on the OS 6 inch map. While the head lies on the bank of the laneway just W of them. The lower portion of the shaft is firmly fixed in the base. The base is a rectangular block with a bevelled and chamfered upper edge. Due to the nature of the stone which has a rough surface on one side the chamfer does not appear on one long side or on parts of the 2 short sides. The shaft is straight with parallel sides with a subrectangular cross-section, the edges are chamfered from 0.24m up from the base. The head has suffered damage, one arm is missing and the other 2 are damaged. The edges of the arms and ring are chamfered. There are no signs of any carving or ornament' (SMR file).
