• WM016-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the top of a high prominent gravel hill with good views in all directions. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 31m N-S; 29m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and a shallow intervening fosse. The inner bank is low, and the fosse is only visible in the SW and NE quadrants. The outer bank is very low, little more than a berm and is only visible from SE-S. Vague traces of cultivation ridges are visible running E-W across the interior, in which several depressions are also visible, probably the result of quarrying. This ringfort is situated in a commercial quarry, and the ground has been quarried away all around the monument which is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph. • WM017-083 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated in undulating pasture, to E of a quarry, c. 300m SW of Shinglis House. Enclosure (WM017-084----), ringfort (WM017-085----) and the site of a 17th century military camp (WM017-086----) lie 325m to SE. A castle is depicted in 'Shingles' on the 1657 Down Survey map of Rathconrath Barony (NLI MS 723-4). The ruins of a tower house type structure standing on the lands of James Dillon, Earl of Roscommon are depicted on the Down Survey map of Ballymore parish (ibid.). The terrier of the parish map recorded that, ‘Upon Shingles standes a Castle’ (NLI MS 723-4). Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a range of buildings annotated ‘Shinglis Court in ruins’. Described in 1983 as site of Shinglis Court now occupied by some outbuildings which form part of the farmyard of the nearby Shinglis House. No surface remains visible of a castle at this location.   Description

  Situated on SW-facing slope, in pasture, c. 400m S of Shinglis House. Ringfort (WM017-085----) and site of a 17th century military camp (WM017-086----) c. 65 and 90m to NE, respectively. Shinglis Castle (WM017-083----) lies c. 325m to NW. Annotated 'fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Shown on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oblong-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 30m N-S; 17m E-W) with linear earthworks extending from E and S. Described in 1983 as an elongated subrectangular-shaped enclosure enclosed by a slight earth and stone bank which has several small gaps, with no entrance feature visible. The interior has a gentle W-facing slope and dips slightly toward the N and S ends. Modern banks encroach on the exterior. There are quarry holes outside the monument at NE and S. Monument visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography with tree-lined, linear earthworks extending to E and S.   Description

  Situated on E facing slope of a natural rise, in pasture with good views in all directions, c. 400m S of Shinglis House. The site of a 17th century military camp (WM017-086----) lies c. 33m to SSW, an enclosure (WM017-084----) lies c. 65m to SW, and Shinglis Castle (WM017-083----) stands c. c. 325m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped enclosure to the immediate SE of an OS trig. station marking 350ft OD. Described in 1983 as an oval, almost pear-shaped area (dims. 30m E-W; 21.50m N-S) enclosed by the remains of an earthen bank from WNW-W-NE which is reduced to a scarp from NE-E-S-W-NNW, with traces of an external fosse from NW-W-S-E. A low outer earthen bank is only visible from ESE-S-W-N-NE and has a sharp profile and may have been modified to form a post-1700 field bank. There is no indication of an entrance feature. There are disturbance gaps in the bank at SSW, W, NNW and ENE. The interior has a slight NE-facing slope. A linear field bank runs NW-SE just outside the perimeter at N.   Description

  Situated on S facing slope of a rise (350ft OD), in undulating pasture, c. 400m S of Shinglis House. A ringfort (WM017-085----) lies c. 33m to NNE, an enclosure (WM017-084----) c. 95m to SW and Shinglis Castle (WM017-083----) c. 325m to NW. Annotated ‘Site of Irish Camp’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. In 1648 a military camp was established here by Ormond's Royalist army in an attempt to capture the Catholic army under the command of General Owen Roe O'Neill (Woods 1907, 17). Site of 17th century military camp described in 1978 as consisting of the traces of two earthen banks forming a small L-shaped enclosure with one bank extending to the N and the other to the W.   Description

  Situated on low natural hillock on the edge of wet marshy land which has been partially reclaimed. Post-medieval farmhouse located 70m to NE. Enclosure of post-medieval date which consists of a small circular shaped area (diam. 26m) enclosed by a narrow tree-lined earthen bank now mainly reduced to a scarp with external fosse. No entrance feature visible. Rectangular shaped tree-lined annexe or platform built onto W side of enclosure. This enclosure with annexe appears to be post-medieval in date due to profile and size of tree-lined earthen bank and may be associated with nearby farmhouse. • WM024-001 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Sited on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Crannóg (WM024-002----) lies c. 100m to SE. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 25m). Depicted on the 1913 ed. OS 6-inch map as a diamond-shaped enclosure. Monument described in 1971 as a lozenge-shaped area (approx. dims. 41m NE-SW; c. 26m NW-SE) enclosed by a bank and a possible external fosse. The bank is low and is practically reduced to a scarp. There are slight remains of a fosse-like trench at the foot of the scarp. There is no visible trace of an entrance, although there are several slight disturbance gaps. The interior has a gentle WSW-facing slope and is planted with trees. This enclosure appears to have been a ringfort that has been modified to form an estate feature, possibly associated with Shinglis House, which lies c. 950m to N, in the same townland. • WM024-002 Crannog
  Description

  Described by O'Sullivan (2004, 111-2) as following; 'This possible crannóg is a low, oval-shaped mound (dims. 15m N-S x 19m E-W; H 0.45m) on north shore of Lough Sewdy. The site is a low, grassy mound of earth and stone, in rushy, marshy land. The mound has an irregular, grassy surface, with large limestone blocks (1m in length, 40-50cm width) scattered about its surface. These limestone blocks also form a possible kerb around the edge of the mound, particularly along its northern edge (facing shoreline). The site is located right at the end of a narrow promontory running out from the shoreline to the north and is attached to the dry land by a long, narrow (10m in width) spit of ground. This is possibly a causeway, but may be natural in origin. There are also several other possible natural mounds along this shore, including a low oval mound 40m to the east'.
