  Description

  Situated on an irregular-shaped rise (300ft/91m OD) in undulating pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM031-072----) conjoined to NE. Annotated 'Forts' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as one of a pair of conjoined oval-shaped earthworks. Levelled monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible.   Description

  Situated on an irregular-shaped rise (300ft/91m OD) in undulating pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM031-071----) conjoined to SW.   Description

• WM032-031 Enclosure
  Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1971 and described as following; 'Almost completely demolished. According to the 1914 ed. OS 6-inch map it was rectilinear and a small portion of a steep earth and stone scarp (H 1.8m) survives just inside the modern road side fence on the E side, elsewhere, the scarp has been levelled. The original entrance way is not recognisable. The interior area rises appreciably towards the centre. There are small irregular undualtions on the site which are probably due to the uneven spreading of the material of the enclosure. The site is on the top of a natural rise which is steep on the N, W and S side. The site is overlooked by a higher adjacent ridge on the SE. There are excellent views to the SW and W’ (SMR File 12/07/1971). The enclosure is not depicted as an antiquity on the first ed. OS 6-inch map.   Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI in 1971 and described as following; 'Completely demolished. The site is divided by a modern NE-SW stone wall. The site is covered with very slight undulations. The perimeter cannot be traced. The site is a slight natural rise on the WSW side of a high hill of average to good pasture. Excellent views to the SE, S and W' (ASI File 12/07/1971). Depicted as a D-shaped enclosure on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map and annotated as 'fort' on the OS Fair Plan (2019 Pt. 1) (SMR File). • WM032-036 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI and described in 1971 as following; ‘A small D-shaped enclosure bounded by a slight earth and stone bank with very slight remains of an external fosse. The site has a general uneven slope from ENE-WSW. The slight fosse is visible from N-S-SE. It is completely filled up elsewhere. A modern NE-SW field fence extends just outside and roughly parallel with the straight side of the ‘D’ on the NW. The bank is disturbed in several places by cattle and scrub roots. There is a wide relatively modern gap in the bank on the NNE. A gap (Wth 2.3m) on the S represents the entrance. Abutting against the inside of the bank on the E side of the entrance is a small sub-rectangular depression with slight remains of an earthen bank on its upper edge. Extending WSW from the inside of the bank on the ENE is a slight earthen bank with small stones visible in it. It is 8.2m long. Near the centre of the Rath is a large stone which is probably in its natural position. To the W of it is a very slight mound of earth and stones in which some whitethorn bushes grow. This mound was probably raised by the roots of the bushes’(SMR File 12/07/1971). The monument was revisited by the ASI in 1977 when the monument was described as ‘been destroyed’ and ‘there is now no indication of the site. The field has been tilled and is under barley. No features are visible. The site was on a rise overlooked by slightly higher ground to the E, with extensive views to the N, W and S. Slieve Bloom Mountains visible to the SW’ (ASI File 12/09/1977). • WM032-037 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Monument surveyed by ASI and described in 1977 as following; ‘This site has been destroyed. It was marked on the 1912 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval embankment with a field fence running N-S through it. The site has been completely leveled on both sides of the field fence and all that remains is a small oval knoll with no trace of any artificial scarping or banks or fosses. The fields on both sides of the fence have been tilled and that to the E of the fence is now under barley while that to the W is under barley and cabbage. It is not now possible to say what form the site took originally but it was probably a ringfort. No features are now visible. The site was on a hill on the W slope , N of the summit of a large N-S ridge. It was overlooked on the E by higher ground but there are very extensive views to the NW, W and SW’ (ASI File 12/09/1977). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 16 February 2013
