• WM025-040 Standing stone
  Description

  Situated on the W side of a low rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1988 as a small limestone slab (H 1.6m; L 0.8m; T 0.3m) which is irregular in elevation and tapers to a roughly rounded top. Parts of the stone appear to have broken away toward the top on one side. The stone is in a slight depression. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. • WM025-041 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low terrace on the NW facing slope of low hillock in gently undulating countryside with good views to SW and ESE. Taghboyne church (WM026-078001-), graveyard (WM026-078003-) and ecclesiastical enclosure (WM026-078001-) 220m to S. Ringfort (WM026-077----) 420m to SW. Large circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 33m N-S) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank that is intersected at E by a post-1700 field fence running roughly N-S. Gap (Wth 2m) in bank at SW appears to be modern gap but may represent the original entrance feature. The interior gently slopes from SE-NW with cultivation ridges running NE-SW across the monument. • WM025-077 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Sited on the top of a long, almost flat-topped ridge running NE-SW, in pasture, with a good view to S, restricted by surrounding hillocks in other directions. Monument described as a long oval-shaped area (approx. 42m NNE-SSW; 23m WNW-ESE) enclosed by an inner earthen bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The entrance is represented by a gap (Wth at top 5.3m; basal Wth 1.7m) in the inner bank and by a causeway (Wth at top 2.1m; overall Wth 6m; H 0.7m) at NE. The bank is steep on the exterior and is best preserved from S-W and from N-NE-ENE. It is almost reduced to a scarp from W-NW-N and from ENE-E-S and there is a large disturbance gap at SW. A shallow intervening fosse is visible from SSW-W-N-E and is infilled from E-S-SSW. The ground at the foot of the scarp has been quarried away at SW. The outer bank is visible from WNW-NW-N and at NE. The interior rises slightly gently from the perimeter towards the centre where there are the remains of a house site (WM025-077001-). • WM025-077001 House - indeterminate date
  Description

  Situated on top of a long, almost flat-topped ridge running NE-SW, in pasture, with a good view to S, restricted by surrounding hillocks in other directions. In the centre of ringfort (WM025-077----) are the remains of a subrectangular-shaped house site (overall dims. 14m NE-SSW; 10.8m NW-SE) which consists of a raised platform defined by a sharp scarp (max. H 1m) of earth and stone. Two short banks project from the NW side and may define an adjoining annexe (overall dims. 3.5m NE-SW; 2m NW-SE). • WM025-078001 Church
  Description

  A monastery as founded at Taghboyne (Teach Baoithín) by Baoithín (alias Mobhaoi), son of Cuana of the Ceinéal Éanna, a branch of the Ceinéal Conail in Donegal (Ó Riain 2011, 89). It is possible that Baoithín of Westmeath is identical with Baoithín of Iona (ibid.). The feastday of Bishop Baoithín of Taghboyne fell on the 19th of February as recorded in the Martyrology of Tallaght. Situated on top of hillock with good views of the surrounding countryside. Poorly preserved ruins of Taghboyne church aligned NE-SW stands in NW quadrant of triangular-shaped graveyard (WM025-078003-) both of which are enclosed by a large ecclesiastical enclosure (WM025-078002-). The N wall of the church no longer survives but may have been incorporated into the N boundary wall of the graveyard. Only the lower courses of the W wall survives with the lower half of a late medieval doorway in the centre of the W gable. The E end of the S wall now covered in ivy is the best preserved with the remains a slit ope window visible. No surface remains visible of the destroyed E gable. The poorly preserved W doorway consists of a rebated punch dressed limestone doorway of late medieval date with single arch stone lying on the ground inside the doorway. The interior of the church is covered in vegetation making detailed examination of the building impossible. See attached plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM025-078002 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

Oval shaped ecclesiastical enclosure (approx. diam. 185m N-S; 225m E-W) preserved in curving field boundaries surrounding the church (WM025-078001-) and graveyard (WM025-078003-) at Taghboyne (Swan 1988, 22). The curving boundary from NNE-E-S-S-W consists of a dry-stone wall that forms the townland boundary with Redmondstown. Linear earthworks are clearly visible on aerial photographs taken the 14/07/1970 inside the ecclesiastical enclosure to the S and E of the church and graveyard (CUCAP BDK026).   Description

  Situated on top of hillock with good views of the surrounding countryside. Poorly preserved ruins of Taghboyne church (WM025-078001-) stands in NW quadrant of triangular-shaped graveyard (approx. int. dims. 44m NW-SE x 41m NE-SW) both of which are enclosed by a large ecclesiastical enclosure (WM025-078002-). The N wall of the church no longer survives but may have been incorporated into the N boundary wall of the graveyard. The triangular-shaped graveyard is enclosed by a stone wall of post-1700 date with entrance gate and stone stile at W. The graveyard contains 18th and 19th century memorials mainly concentrated to the S of the church ruins. See attached plan of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.
