• WM001-003 Bawn
  Description

  The place-name 'Bawn' is depicted on all editions of the OS 6-inch maps which may indicate the presence of a post-1700 bawn wall enclosing a post-1700 house. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map the place-name is annotated beside a cluster of three buildings with walled garden to E. These buildings were accessed via a long driveway to S. Togher Castle (WM001-004----) located 1.1km to SSW. Site visited by ASI in 1980 and no castle or upstanding remains of a bawn wall was identified at this location. The two storey high farmhouse was thought to be c. 200-300 years old according to the occupant at the time. Compiled by: Frank Coyne & Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 15 November 2016

• WM001-004 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated on a low rise of ground on flat well drained pasture land. A tower house type castle is depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Foyran parish (NLI, MS 723-4). On this map the castle is shown standing immediately N of a roadway running towards the castle (WM001-001----) and bridge (WM001-052----) of Finnea. The present road appears to be following the line of this medieval routeway. The terrier of the 1657 Down Survey map of Foyran parish lists Edward Symon as the owner in 1641 of the lands of Togher (ibid.). Poorly preserved rectangular-shaped tower house (int. dims. 7.8m E-W x 5.4m N-S; wall T 1.1-1.4m) of which only the ivy-clad S wall survives upstanding to first floor level (H c. 9m), elsewhere only the low wall footings are visible. The S wall has a slight batter and was constructed of coursed mortared limestone with dressed quoins visible on the SE and SW angles. A broken out window was visible at ground floor level which was set into a large recessed opening in the centre of the S wall. Directly above at first floor level there was a round-headed window now obscured by ivy. Photographs of the S wall taken in the 1970s show joist holes above the ground floor window to support the wooden floor of the castle. No clear evidence of a doorway although it may have been located ay N end of the E wall. There was no stone vault over the ground of the castle which may indicate a later date. The interior of the castle is now filled with collapsed rubble and some rubbish. There are no visible remains of an enclosing bawn or of any earthworks indicating the presence of a bawn around the tower house. • WM001-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on SE edge of rising ground with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. A roughly oval-shaped area (diam. 24m N-S x 26.8m E-W) defined by a broad bank of earth and stones which is best preserved at E and W and traces of an external fosse visible at SW only. Entrance gap (Wth 1.6m-6.4m) at ESE. The interior of the ringfort slopes from N-S. Possible evidence of quarrying on the S side of the ringfort immediately S of the enclosing bank. The ringfort is enclosed within a small field of post-1700 date the boundaries of which encroaches upon the perimeter of the monument at S and W. Wall footings of a possible post-1700 house can be seen outside the enclosing bank at N & NW. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM001-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on low-lying marshy land with views of the surrounding countryside to S. A roughly circular area (diam. 22.4m NE-SW; 21.2m NW-SE) enclosed by an earth and stone bank mainly reduced to a scarp with traces of an external shallow fosse visible at N and S only, at E the site is enclosed by a field hedge and the fosse here forms a ditch. No entrance feature visible. The SW quadrant of the interior is higher than the other sides. An oval-shaped depression in the NW quadrant may be the result of post-1700 quarrying. • WM001-055 Church
  Description

  Described in 1980 as ‘the ruins of a small plain rectangular stone-built structure with a small 2-storey tower at the W end (long axis E-W). No features survive in the church itself – the walls survive to only c. 1.25m high and some red brick is visible in the N wall. There appears to have been a gallery at the W end with doorway from tower (upper floor). The tower has a pointed doorway in its S side and pointed windows in its 3 external walls & a doorway into the church in the W wall (W wall of church). The line of the roof of the church can be seen in the wall of the tower. There is a good deal of red brick visible around the openings. The top of the tower has low battlemented wall around it. This seems to be a late church probably late 18th / early 19th century in date. It is in a small rectangular enclosure outlined by a low stone wall and there are no burials. There is no sign of an earlier enclosure’ (SMR File 1980). Togher Castle (WM001-004----) located 650m to the W and bawn (WM001-003----) located 550m to the NE.
