- WM001-046 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on top of a natural hillock with extensive views to S, SW & NW restricted views elsewhere. Roughly circular raised area (diam. 33.5m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (ext. H 1-2m) best preserved from S-SW elsewhere reduced to a scarp with slight traces of a fosse visible at N only. The scarp appears to have been steepened in modern times and a modern stone wall intersects the site at NE. There is a modern field fence on the top of the scarp from W-N. Entrance gap (top Wth 5.5m; base Wth 2.5m) at N and second entrance gap (top Wth 4.2m; base Wth 1.8m) at S, however both of these have a modern appearance. The interior of the ringfort is uneven, rising from the bank in the NE quadrant and then dropping down towards the bank to S & E. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. - WM001-045 Ringfort - unclassified
Description
Situated on a natural hillock in undulating countryside. Monument levelled during land reclamation works carried out in 1968. Depicted as an irregular shaped platform on the 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. The Ordnance Survey Fair Plan of 1837 depicted the monument as an irregular pointed oval-shaped enclosure with its long axis N-S and annotated the earthwork as a ‘fort’. Described in 1968 as a 'small sub-triangular enclosure densely overgrown with bushes. Very slight collapsed stone wall slightly banked up to level interior where outside ground dips'. In 1973 the levelled site was surveyed and described as an 'oval enclosure (dims. 34.3m N-S x 22.3m E-W) most probably a ringfort is demolished. The interior dips slightly from the N-S axis towards the W. The almost level interior area has several slight humps and depressions which were probably made when demolishing the perimeter which is now represented by a low fairly smooth stony scarp. There is no definite evidence of a fosse. There is no visible evidence of an entrance way. No visible evidence of habitation' (ASI Field Report 20/03/1973).
