• WM001-014 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Depicted as a tower house type castle in the townland of Ballintullagh [Tullystown] on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fore Barony (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of the 1657 Down Survey recorded that the owner of the castle and lands of Ballintullagh [Tullystown] in 1641 was James Nugent who is listed as an English Protestant (ibid.). The remains of a poorly preserved rectangular-shaped tower house (approx. int. dims. 6m N-S x 4.8m E-W) survives in the farmyard to the S of Tullystown House. All that remains upstanding are the S and W walls of the tower house which have been incorporated into a range of post-1700 farm buildings. The tower house may have stood three storeys high and has rounded corners visible on the SW angle with a base batter visible on the W wall (L 7.2m; H c. 7m; wall T 1.2-1.4m). No windows visible in the ground floor of the upstanding walls, a niche is visible in the S wall. A broken out fireplace and chimney flue has been inserted into the internal face of the S wall (L 8.5m; H c. 7m) in a second building phase. At first floor level there is evidence of a blocked-up window in the W wall. The chimney flue of the inserted fireplace cuts across an original window of which a single window splay still survives in the S wall at first floor level. Cut-stone from the tower house has been re-used in the construction of the post-1700 farm buildings. A square-headed slit window of 15th or 16th century style has been re-used in one of the farm buildings. It has been suggested that the walled garden to the W of the tower house incorporates portions of the original bawn wall (WM001-014001-). To the N of the castle is Tullystown House, an early 19th century house of 2 storeys over a basement 3 bays with a central breakfront & good doorway with fanlight & sidelights. • WM001-014001 Bawn
  Description

  Depicted as a tower house type castle in the townland of Ballintullagh [Tullystown] on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fore Barony (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of the 1657 Down Survey recorded that the owner of the castle and lands of Ballintullagh [Tullystown] in 1641 was James Nugent who is listed as an English Protestant (ibid.). The remains of a poorly preserved rectangular-shaped tower house (WM001-014----) survives in the farmyard to the S of Tullystown House. To the W of the tower house a walled enclosure (approx. dims. 60m E-W x 62m N-S) has been used as a walled garden of 19th century date. The wall has been repaired in places and this appears to be 19th century work & a gateway inserted in the north wall. Part of this garden wall appears to be older than the 19th century and may be the remains of a bawn wall contemporaneous with the tower house. A second enclosure (dims. 40m N-S x 110m E-W) to the S and SE of the tower house also has ancient walls which again were repaired in 19th century with a range of 19th century farm buildings built up against the N side of the wall. Fragments of dressed stone work occur in several of the farm buildings & a square-headed slit window of 15th or 16th century style has been re-used in one of the farm buildings. • WM001-015 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Monument surveyed in 2015 and described by McGuinness (2015, 72) as following: ‘Monument could not be seen from the roadside, and landowners later informed the survey-team that they could never see anything at the location marked. Although it could not be located on 26/7/79 due to high grass, it has been described on two subsequent occasions by different ASI fieldworkers. The account of 7/4/81: A small circular earthwork outlined by a shallow circular fosse enclosing a level interior. There is no indication of a bank. The site slopes very slightly from NE-SW. The area around the site is crossed by old cultivation ridges running NE-SW, & the site has been somewhat defaced by these. It is likely that any trace of a bank would have been removed by the cultivation. Sited on the top of a large prominent natural ridge running NW-SE. The ridge has a broad flat top. Located in pasture land with other ridges to the E, S & W, but with low lying bog to the N & NW.... [SMR file] And that of 1997: The site is located on top of a low rise with excellent views over bogland towards Lough Sheelin to the north-west. Condition: Poor. The site is very difficult to make out. The site is now under pasture. Description: The site consists of the remains of a ring-barrow. It consists of a low circular mound, c. 5m-5.2m in diameter and c. 20cms in height, surrounded by a fosse. The fosse has an overall width of c. 1.8m. Its base is 20cms in depth beneath external ground level. [SMR file] An undated, very abbreviated account which appears not to be based on a site visit describes it simply as a ‘small low circular mound of earth is delimited by a shallow fosse which in turn is surrounded by a low earthen bank’ [SMR file]. This account, though it mentions an outer bank, should probably be rejected in favour of those descriptions clearly based on a site visit. From these accounts, this tiny earthwork placed atop a ‘large prominent natural ridge‘ with ‘excellent views over bogland towards Lough Sheelin to the north-west’, might be interpreted as a ring-barrow with the bank flattened by past cultivation. If there never was a bank, the level interior raised 0.2m above ground level, which can be gathered from the 1981 and 1997 accounts suggests that this monument might be either a type of ring-barrow with no external bank or a ditch-barrow, a type more recently identified by ASI fieldworkers’. • WM001-021 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in area of scrub and woodland on W facing slope of hill, with ringfort (WM001-022----) 90m to SW. A heavily overgrown ringfort consisting of a roughly oval-shaped area (approx. diam. 54m N-S; 31m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks with a deep intervening external fosse and entrance gap (top Wth 5.1m; base Wth 1.6m) at E. The massive inner bank has several gaps due to erosion and is much disturbed by tree roots and animal burrows. Evidence for internal drystone facing of the inner bank near the entrance gap. There are remains of a rectangular house (WM001-021001-) against the inside of the bank at the W side of the entrance gap. The outer bank is only visible from N-E and may be a later enclosing feature possibly associated with the area of woodland in which the monument is located. • WM001-021001 Hut site
  Description

  Situated in area of scrub and woodland on W facing slope of hill, with ringfort (WM001-022----) 90m to SW. A heavily overgrown ringfort (WM001-021----) with the grass-covered wall footings (Wth 1.4m; H 0.6m) of a rectangular house (int. L 5m x int. Wth 4.4m), the S end of which is built up against the inner face of the bank immediately W of the ringfort entrance gap at E. The house has a wide gap in its E side at its SE corner and a narrow gap near the middle of the W side. Some stones are visible in the bank of the house but there is no visible evidence of masonry. • WM001-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in hazel woodland on top of a ridge running NW-SE, in area of undulating countryside with ringfort (WM001-021---) 90m to NE. A heavily overgrown platform type ringfort consists of a raised circular area (diam. 26.5m) enclosed by a massive earth and stone bank and shallow fosse best preserved at E & W with causewayed entrance gap (top Wth 2.5m; bottom Wth 0.9m) at N. The interior of the site is somewhat uneven and contains the remains of a rectangular house (WM001-022001-). There are slight remains of a low external bank but it has been almost completely levelled. The rath is largely overgrown with hazel and briars making detailed examination impossible.   Description

  Situated in hazel woodland on top of a ridge running NW-SE, in area of undulating countryside with ringfort (WM001-021---) 90m to NE. A heavily overgrown platform type ringfort (WM001-022----) with the grass covered wall footings (Wth 0.9m) of a rectangular house (int. L 9.6m x int. Wth 3.5m) aligned ENE-WSW in the interior. • WM001-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise of ground in undulating countryside with excellent views to W, restricted views by surrounding hills in other directions. Ringfort (WM001-022----) 360m to NNW, second ringfort (WM001-025----) 390m to SSE. On the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map the W side of the ringfort is intersected by a laneway running N-S. This laneway appears to cut across the W side of the enclosure creating the irregular-shaped monument depicted on the revised 1911 ed. 25 inch map. Roughly D-shaped area (dims. 38.8m NE-SW; 33.4m NW-SE) enclosed by an earthen bank best preserved from W to N, elsewhere mainly reduced to a scarp with straight side at S. No visible trace of an enclosing fosse. A gap (Wth 2.2-4.4m) at E probably represents the original entrance feature. A modern field fence intersects the site at W on a N-S axis. The interior is uneven, rising from the perimeter towards the centre. There is evidence of disturbance from quarrying and there are slight traces of old cultivation ridges running NW-SE.
