• WM026-062 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on N-facing slope of a low rise, in gently undulating pasture. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a large roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described as a small oval-shaped area (dims. 34m N-S; 30m E-W) defined by a scarp and external fosse. The scarp is slight and the fosse is narrow and shallow, although is reasonably well defined to S, W and N. There is no trace of a fosse at E, which may have been infilled when an irregular shaped field boundary was constructed to E, since removed. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a slight N-facing slope with what appear to be natural humps and hollows. A wide shallow depression runs into the fosse at SSW. A field fence running roughly E-W is to the immediate N of the monument. Outline of levelled monument partially visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM026-067 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Castle ruins on SW angle of Tyrrellstown House which forms SW corner of the farmyard quadrangle as depicted on the OS 25-inch map. A castle is shown in Tyrrellstown on the Down Survey barony map of Fartullagh, although it is not shown on the Parish Map and is not mentioned in the Terrier (NLI, MS 723-4). Monument described in 1976 as a portion of a castle which is now incorporated into the structure of the present Tyrrellstown House. It appears to form a projecting wing of the house in the form of a small ancient turret or tower. The walls (T 1.5m) are constructed of rubble stone and contain a small, narrow doorway. The site is now ruinous and there are no clear indications of any further early walls. A broken rectangular-shaped stone basin or trough rests on a nearby garden wall and may be associated with the monument. According to a second report from 1976 all that remains is a short stretch of wall (L 3m; H 6m) running S from the SW corner of Tyrrellstown House. The rest was apparently removed some years ago.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in pasture, overlooked by higher ground to NE and with a narrow view of Lough Ennell to W. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 38.6m E-W; 37.2m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is steep on the exterior and is best preserved from N-E and is almost reduced to a scarp from E-S-W-N. The interior of the bank is defined by four large stones which are slightly spaced apart at NE and may have formed a facing. There are traces of a very slight fosse and a portion of earth and stone field boundary crosses it at S. The original entrance is not visible. The interior has a slight ENE-facing slope with traces of cultivation ridges running ENE-WSW and several naturally formed humps and hollows in the centre. A low scarp (L 8.2m; H 0.5m) with a facing of large stones curves to S and SSW of the centre and is of unknown significance. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on a low ridge running N-S, in pasture, with extensive views to S and SW. Depicted as an enclosure on Larkin’s 1808 map of Co. Westmeath (NLI, MS 46,580). Monument described in 1978 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 59m NNE-SSW; 42m ESE-WNW) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. The bank is well defined on the exterior and is almost reduced to a scarp which is steep from NNE-ESE. The fosse is present from NNW-N-NNE and from SSW-S-SSE. There may be traces of an outer bank at N but this is indefinite as it seems to continue on to the E and may be an old field bank. There may have been an entrance at SE where the scarp is lower. The interior is level and featureless. An old field bank running NNE-SSW, now largely removed, skirted the edge of the monument, to W.
