• WI015-016 Historic town
  Description

  Part of the ancient see lands of Glendalough, Dunlavin appears to have been an episcopal manor with a borough attached to it. While mentioned in an Inquisition of 1326 it seems to have fallen into decay soon afterwards. A mill is referred to in the fourteenth century (MacNeill 1950, 164-6, 190) and the 17th-century parish church (WI015-016001-) was demolished before 1838. The present town is an 18th-century estate town. • WI015-016001 Church
  Description

  Situated in Dunlavin Town and part of the medieval borough of Dunlavin (WI025-016----). The church was demolished before 1838 (O'Flanagan 1928, 112) and replaced by the present Church of Ireland parish church. More recently the graveyard has been turned into a small park and the headstones re-erected around the perimeter. Three 17th-century headstones survive (Katherin Hughes ob. 1668; Ann Wilkins ob. 1694; Will(iam) ..... (?) ob. 167?). A plaque, now in the vestry of St Nicholas' Church, commemorated the rebuilding of the chancel in 1681.   Description

  This plaque records the rebuilding of the chancel of the 17th cent. church (WI015-016001-). Recorded by Bradley and King (1989, 40) as follows: 'Stone plaque from the graveyard, now mounted in the vestry of St. Nicholas' Church. It has the following inscription: CORNIT ANTHONY/ HATHORNE OUT OF HIS/ PIOUS ZEAL TO THE / PLACE OF GODS WORSHIP/ BEQUEATHED 50lib STER/ FOR THE REBUILDING/ OF THIS CHAUNCEL/ WHICH WAS FAITHFUL/ LY PERFORMED BY THE/ PIOUS CARE OF MR/ PHILLIP HATHORNE/ HIS NEPHEW AND/ HEIRE ANNO DOM 1681.'
