  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1830. The house is finished in render and sits on a slightly projecting squared plinth. A rough flight of concrete steps rise to the replacement, part glazed, panelled front door. Window openings are flat-headed with top-hung replacement timber frames. The pitched roof is finished with natural slate and cast-iron rainwater goods. Chimneystacks are rendered with plain copes and clay pots. The house is road fronted; it faces Pound Lane on the southern approach to the Square.

The panelled front door has a plain fanlight; it is flanked with panelled stone pilasters and all is set within a semi-circular headed stone dressed opening. Window openings are flat-headed with top-hung replacement uPVC frames. The pitched roof is finished with artificial slate and uPVC rainwater goods. The chimneystack is rendered and has clay pots. The house is road-fronted and faces directly onto the centre of the Square.

  Terraced three-bay two-storey house, built 1830. The building was originally a house, later became a house and shop and now has reverted to its original use as a house again. It is finished in render with moulded quoins and dressings. To the north-east side are two lower portions which are now annexed to this property. The front panelled door has a plain fanlight and a painted moulded surround. The door to the former shop is sheeted and has a block and start surround. Window openings are flat-headed and have a mixture of top-hung replacement or multiple paned fixed timber frames. The hipped roof is finished with natural slate and cast-iron rainwater goods and has bracketed, slightly overhanging eaves. The house faces the street and is set on the corner of the Square.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1830. The house is finished in roughcast render with moulded quoins and dressings. To the north-east is a long part two-storey and part single-storey return. The front door is now obscured by a recent glazed and gabled porch. Window openings are flat-headed with uPVC replacement frames. The pitched roof is finished with artificial slate with cast-iron rainwater goods; the eaves have paired brackets and are slightly overhanging. Chimneystacks have slightly corbelled caps and clay pots; one is rendered and the other is constructed in granite. The house is slightly set back behind a low rendered wall. It is adjacent to the street but faces onto an un-tarred laneway.

  Detached three-bay two-storey former market house, built c.1820, now in use as an office. The building is finished in roughcast render with granite dressings, granite quoins and a coursed granite plinth. A double flight of stone steps rises to the first floor and gives access to the sheeted timber double door; there is a plain fanlight and all is set within a semi-circular arch headed opening with stone surround. Windows have a mixture of flat-headed and semi-circular headed openings; flat-headed openings have six over six timber sash frames while the semi-circular headed openings have tripartite frames with six over six and two over two timber sash frames. The hipped roof is finished with natural slate and cast-iron rainwater goods; there is a corbelled granite eaves course and a small fleche with an ogee hipped copper clad roof; there is a clock and weather vane. The market house sits in the middle of the square.

To the north-east side is a multiple pane timber shopfront which is flanked with panelled pilasters and surmounted with a plain timber shop sign. Window openings are flat-headed with granite surrounds with keystones and one over one timber sash frames. The pitched roof is finished with natural slate with part cast-iron and part uPVC rainwater goods. The chimneystack is rendered with clay pots. The building is road fronted and faces directly onto the square.

  Detached four-bay two-storey over basement courthouse, built 1842-3; dated 1843, on a symmetrical plan with single-bay two-storey advanced end bays; pair of single-bay (single-bay deep) double-height recessed lower porches. Closed, 1961. Adapted to alternative use, 1996. Hipped slate roof behind parapet with clay ridge tiles extending into pressed or rolled iron ridges, and concealed rainwater goods with cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Replacement rendered, ruled and lined walls (ground floor) on cut-granite chamfered plinth with repointed granite ashlar piers to corners; replacement rendered, ruled and lined surface finish (first floor) with rusticated rendered piers to corners supporting ogee-detailed cut-granite cornice below inscribed parapet ("1843"). Camber-headed window openings in camber-headed recesses (end bays) with cut-granite sills, and channelled voussoirs framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-granite sill course, and rendered surrounds framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Square-headed door openings below round-headed niches (porches) with cut-granite step thresholds, and cut-granite doorcases with monolithic pilasters supporting ogee-detailed pediments on fluted consoles framing timber panelled double doors. Round-headed window openings (side elevations) with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing six-over-six timber sash windows. Full-height courtroom remodelled, 1996, with granite flagged floor, carved timber surrounds to window openings framing timber panelled splayed reveals, and exposed strutted King post timber roof construction with wind braced timber boarded ceiling. Set in landscaped grounds with repointed granite ashlar piers to perimeter having cut-granite pyramidal capping supporting cast-iron double gates.

  Detached multiple-bay single-storey Methodist church, built 1873. The church is constructed in coursed granite which rests on a small chamfered plinth. The front door is located within a small projecting gabled porch which is on the north side. To the east and west elevations there are relatively recent additions. Window openings are pointed arch headed with lattice pattern frames. To the north elevation there is a triple lancet window. The interior has been stripped of all ecclesiastical fittings but retains a timber boarded vaulted ceiling with geometric timber frame. The church is set on a slight rise and is set back behind a low granite wall with a wrought-iron gate.

  Description

  Detached five-bay four-storey mill, built c.1915, now in use as a house. To the south-west is a smaller wing dating from 1906; these portions are all that now survive of a once much larger 19th / early 20th-century mill complex. The building is constructed in coursed and semi-coursed granite and the upper floors have numerous structural tie rods and patress plates. The front door with plain sidelights is set within a flat-headed opening. Window openings are dressed with block and start surrounds and have either one over one timber sash frames or they have been covered with translucent corrugated plastic sheeting. The slates of the pitched roof have been coated in tar and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
