  Description

  A deserted medieval borough known as Castlemore, Forth or Forth O' Nolan. Established c. 1174 on the marriage of Basilia, Strongbow's sister to Raymond le Gros. Second in size only to Carlow but abandoned in late fourteenth/fifteenth centuries. Present remains consist of a large motte and bailey (CW008-033001-) and a graveyard (CW008-033003-), possibly the site of the former parish church (CW008-033002-).   Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 National Monument No. 545. Large steep-sided, flat-topped mound (H 9m; summit diam. c. 20m) enclosed by large fosse (D at SW c. 5m; Wth 4m). Traces of approximately square bailey (dims. c. 32m x 32m; H at N c. 2m) outside fosse at NW. Granite pillar H c. 1.7m with double-ended Latin cross in relief found nearby, re-erected on summit of motte. Constructed in 1181, according to Giraldus Cambrensis. (Bradley 1989, 27)

  Description

  A triangular area (map dims. c. 30m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) at the junction of two roads is named 'Leamaneh Grave Yard' on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and 'Leamaneh Burial Ground' on the 1938-9 ed.. The parish church of SS Mary and David (CW008-033002-), not now precisely located, may be connected with this small graveyard. Located 200m to E of motte (CW016-085001-).   Description

  National Monument No. 545. Situated on summit of motte (CW008-033001-). According to Orpen (1906, 379) this was moved from a nearby graveyard (CW008-033003-) in the 18th century. Corlett (2003, 94) describes it as a slab (L 1.95m; T 0.3m; Wth 0.58m tapering to 0.35m) in recumbent position decorated with a cross (Wth 0.43m), shaft (Wth 0.1m) and terminating in a cross (Wth 0.32m), all in low relief. There is also a transom (Wth 0.43m) transecting midway along the shaft. It has been ascribed a 13th/early 14th-century date. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 September 2009

• CW008-090 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  In tillage. A large enclosure (int. diam. c. 70m) identified as a cropmark by Faith Bailey and Simon Dowling on satellite imagery (Google Earth Pro, imagery date 14 July 2018). The enclosure is defined by a very wide fosse (Wth c. 10m). The fosse in the N quadrant is truncated by a field boundary running NE-SW across it. A mound barrow (CW008-034----) is located c. 80m to the NE and a motte and bailey (CW008-033001-) is located c. 300m to the W.   Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey cut stone former forge, c. 1870, with segmental-headed opening to centre having brick surround and crow-stepped gables. Renovated, c. 1990, to accommodate residential use. Wall-mounted cast-iron Edwardian letter box, c. 1910.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey Regency house, c. 1820, with entrance front having round-headed door opening with timber doorcase, giant pilasters to ends, bowed ends and overhanging eaves. Interior retains original fittings. Group of detached outbuildings to rear.

  Description

  Remains of detached eight-bay two-storey country house, c. 1874, on an asymmetrical plan possibly incorporating fabric of earlier house, c. 1675. Hood mouldings to openings and crenellations. Burnt, c. 1975 and now in ruins. Group of detached outbuildings to site.
