What a townland is
The townland is the smallest land division of Ireland, and the unit of a rural address. Old registers, such as Griffith's Valuation and the 1901 and 1911 censuses, file each one under its civil parish and barony, which each townland page here names where the statutory boundaries give them. Its boundary is the one Tailte Éireann draws, and the registered freehold parcels whose centre falls inside it are its land parcels.
