  Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Rectangular building (10.7m N-S, 6.9m E-W) of three storeys, with stair tower at SW. Constructed of rubble with split stone laid in mortar with ashlar quoins. Entrance on N side of projecting stair tower protected by machicolation on third floor of tower, which originally carried wooden stairs. Bartizan at NE corner of main tower. Wooden floors carried on corbels. Oven and kitchen fireplace in north gable wall. Fireplaces in N and S walls of 1st and 2nd floor. Attic floor entered from stair tower, giving access also to crenellated parapet on E and W walls. Probably built in 1630's by James Butler (JRSAI 1892, 444).

In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 22 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Wall foundations and W gable of featureless rectangular structure (26.5m x 6.4m) of split stone and rubble masonry. W gable and adjacent portion of N wall show pronounced exterior base batter (90-100m E-W x 60m N-S). Circular graveyard (CW024-027002-) shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map has been quarried away. Holy well (CW024-028----) 200m to SSE.

  The graveyard, depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1839 'OS 6-inch' map and as a roughly rectangular area on the 1908 'OS 6-inch' map (map dims. c. 62m N-S; c. 99m E-W), has been quarried away (Brindley and Kilfeather 1993, 71). Church (CW024-027001-) roughly centrally placed within the graveyard. Holy well (CW024-028----) 200m to SSE. • CW024-029 Bridge
  Description

  16th-century wooden bridge which traversed the River Barrow connecting the townlands of Brandondale on the west side of the river to Tinnahinch on the eastern bank, c. 330m SW and downstream of the present 18th-century stone bridge at Graiguenamanagh. According to O'Leary (1892, 302), 'Tinnehinch Castle [CW024-026----] also guarded a wooden bridge, the first across the river at this place. We find, in December of the year 1549, a project was sent to Government for making a bridge over the Barrow between "Duiske Abbey" [KK029-018001-] and the "Kavanaghs' Country." At the building of the present lock about seventy years ago some of the old oak piles of this bridge were taken up'. See KK029-042--- for the Co.   Seven-arch shale-built hump-back road bridge over river, c. 1765, with granite dressings including rusticated voussoirs, triple keystones and recessed niches. Designed by George Smith. A section of the bBridge was blown up on 13 June 1798 by Crown Foces to prevent the insurgents crossing into Co. Kilkenny

  Description

  Seven-arch hump back road bridge over river, built 1764-7. Damaged, 1798. Part creeper- or ivy-covered coursed rubble limestone walls centred on submerged triangular cutwaters to piers having cut-granite pyramidal capping with cut-granite coping to parapets. Series of seven segmental arches between round-headed niches with rusticated cut-granite block-and-start voussoirs centred on cut-granite double keystones. Sited spanning River Barrow with grass banks to river.
