Description
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 47m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep, partly waterlogged fosse. From ESE-SSE the site is bordered by a modern roadway and elsewhere is enclosed by field boundaries. Break in bank with accompanying causeway at ESE represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Description
Triple-arch limestone and sandstone road bridge, built 1858, over Dromore River. Cut-stone copings serving as plinth for cast-iron diamond lattice railings to both sides of flat tarmacadam deck. Railings terminating with square-profile lattice piers with domed finials. Roughly coursed limestone spandrels capped by projecting cut-stone course below parapet copings. Cut voussoirs to segmental arches with sharp arris to arch rings. Date stone on upriver elevation to top of arch with Clements family arms shield to arch on downriver elevation. Roughly coursed stone soffits. Rounded dressed limestone U-cutwaters with rounded cappings. Ashlar abutments. Imposts of outer arches rounded towards bank.
