  Description

  A large irregularly shaped former island close to the N shore of Mullagh Lough. Water- levels in the lake have dropped and the island is now joined to the mainland. Davies (1947, 98) recorded that the island is 'cut off from the mainland by a bank and fosse to form a promontory rath'. He speculated that 'this work might have been the predecessor of Cloghballybeg castle (CV040-005----), or it may be much older'.   Description

  A small rectangular building (int. dims. c. 9m E-W; c. 6m N-S) locally known as 'Teampaill Ceallaigh' and associated with St Killian. Situated on a raised mound within an early 19th-century graveyard. Remaining features of building include outline of a much-ruined window in E wall, a blocked-up doorway at the centre of S wall and a chimney and narrow fireplace built into W wall. Davies (1948, 115) was of the opinion that this is not an ecclesiastical building and if it is, it must be post-Reformation. Original location of Mullagh ogham stone (CV040-047----).   Description

  Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 45m) enclosed by two substantial earthen banks with outer fosses. Intermediate fosse is wide and deep while outer fosse is absent from NNW-N-ENE. Corresponding breaks in banks at ENE, with causeway across intermediate fosse, represents original entrance.   Description

  This is the present location, at St Kilians Heritage Centre, of the Mullagh ogham stone. It is believed (local tradition) to have originated from an early church site at Rantavan (CV044-018001-). It was subsequently removed to the graveyard of 'Templekelly' at Mullagh (see CV040-044003-), and reused as a headstone positioned just W of the ruined church of Mullagh (Ferguson 1875, 303). The stone is limestone and measures 0.64 x 0.27 x 0.11m (Macalister 1945, 299). Macalister (1945, 300, no. 312) read the inscription as OSBBAR.   Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Situated on relatively level ground just N of Mullagh village. An earlier report (OPW 1969) recorded a slightly raised circular area defined by a low scarp. • St Killian's Roman Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1855–1865 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Gothic Revival Roman Catholic church, built 1858-62, with four-bay nave having gable-fronted porch, three-stage tower to west end, projecting single-bay chancel, and three-bay single-storey sacristy to north-east. Pitched slate roof, with stone barges having Celtic crosses to apex of and to east chancel gable, cast-iron rainwater goods. Sandstone ashlar parapet to tower with central gablets and corner pinnacles, cornice below. Third stage of tower of squared and coursed rubble stone with ashlar corner piers and pointed arch louvred belfry openings having hood mouldings. Stone cornice between second and third stages. First and second stages of coursed-random rubble sandstone with raised ashlar block-and-start quoins. Stone date shield to west of second stage having hood moulding, roundel window to south side with ashlar surround and label moulding. Pointed arch door opening to south of tower with hood moulding, panelled door, and fixed timber overpanel. Course-random sandstone rubble walls to nave and chancel having ashlar corner buttresses to west gable, stepped angled buttresses to east end and to chancel, all with pinnacles. Plinth course to east gable of chancel. Pointed arch windows throughout, all with hood mouldings apart from rear of nave. Three stepped trefoil-headed lancet windows to east of chancel with single lancets to sides, continuous sill course below. Replacement coloured leaded glass throughout. Recent round window inserted to north-west corner of nave at low level. Limestone ashlar to gabled porch with barge stones and cross finial flanked by pinnacled buttresses, blind trefoil to gable over pointed arch door opening with hood moulding, replacement timber door and replacement stained glass overlight. Interior with suspended plaster ceiling, c.1980. Compartmentalised ceiling to chancel with painted scenes. Pointed chancel arch on engaged hexagonal-profile piers with foliated mouldings. Interior substantially refurbished, c.2000, retaining original pews and glazed timber doors to entrance lobbies. Graveyard to site. Square- and octagonal-profile stone piers with profiled cappings marking road entrance to south-east, having masonry wing walls supporting cast iron railings, cast-iron main gates, and metal pedestrian turnstile to east.

  Description

  Freestanding single-cell Church of Ireland church, built 1819, with three-bay nave, three-stage tower, and single-storey vestry to north. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, barge stones to gables with kneelers, stone chimneystack to gable end of vestry, cast-iron rainwater goods. Crenellated parapet of sandstone ashlar supported on corbels to tower. Stone string courses to second and third stages with coursed random-rubble walls having squared corner stones and wider plinth course to base. Pointed arch belfry openings to upper stage with splayed stone dressings, hood mouldings, and timber louvres with superimposed Y-tracery. Square-headed bipartite fixed-pane window to second stage of tower with timber multiple-pane cusp-headed lights in splayed ashlar surround. Stone plaque shield to south side of first stage. Elliptical-headed lancet window to west of ground level stage having twin pointed arch lights in dressed limestone surround and with label moulding. Coursed rubble stone walls to nave with squared corner stones and plinth course. Pointed arch windows to nave with twin multiple-pane cusp-headed lights in Y-tracery and dressed stone surround, having hood mouldings and sills. Pointed arch window to east end with tripartite timber switch-line cusp-headed lights in dressed stone surround, label moulding and sill. Round-headed window to vestry having twin pointed arch lights with dressed limestone surround and label moulding. Pointed-arch doors to tower and vestry with recent timber sheeted doors, main entrance approached by stone steps. Interior with flat plain plaster ceiling having roll-mould cornice. Tongue and grooved timber wainscoting to nave. Pointed arch opening to entrance lobby with fixed timber overpanel and panelled door. Simple rail surrounding altar table. Pews resting on raised flooring with sandstone flags to floor. Rubble stone wing walls with Scotch coping flanking recent metal gates at road entrance, and stone stile to west wall. Ruins of earlier church to south-west.

  Description

  End-of-terrace two-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, formerly also in commercial use. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks to gable ends, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined smooth rendered walls. Replacement uPVC windows to first floor with stone sills. Timber shopfront comprising recessed central double-leaf glazed doors with chamfer-stop detail and fixed overlight, flanked by display windows with chamfered side windows resting on rendered stall riser. Timber pilasters to either end with incised panels, capitals, and collar moulding supporting signage fascia having dentilated cornice and frieze reading ‘Paddy Fox’ in raised Art-Deco-style lettering.

• Conaty's, house, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  End-of-terrace three-bay three-storey house, built c.1800, formerly also in use as public house and retail outlet. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined smooth-rendered walls with V-jointed stone block-and-start quoins. Window openings of diminishing height at first and second floor with stone sills, uPVC windows and later external timber shutters. Central round-headed entrance to upper floors with spoked fanlight and Gibbsian stone surround having replacement timber door and limestone threshold. Shopfronts of matching design of c.1880 on either side, comprising plate-glass display windows over rendered stallrisers with replacement timber door to shopfront with fixed overlight. Both shopfronts framed between timber pilasters with ornamental console brackets supporting plain fascia and projecting cornice carried across head of central doorcase. Two-storey outbuildings to rear, built c.1860.

  Terraced two-bay two-storey house, built c.1800, with disused shopfront to western bay at ground floor. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, shared rendered chimneystacks to party walls, cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walls with rendered plinth. One-over-one timber sliding sash window to ground and first floor with stone sills, including punched-dressed sill to window over shopfront. Shopfront comprising narrow display window over rendered stall riser with recent timber glazed door and overlight interposed with panelled timber pilasters. Signage fascia wider than shopfront resting on narrow frieze terminating in flat scroll profile below side projections. Simple cornice configured as hood on simple brackets.
