  Description

  Davies (1948, 109) suggested that this was an early church site, and reputedly the seat of a bishop until the 15th century. Tradition holds that the Romanesque door at Kilmore Cathedral (CV040-044----) came from Trinity Island (CV020-077001-) via Slandore. Site today comprises a rectangular raised area (int. dims. 45m NNE-SSW; 50m WNW-ESE) enclosed by a shallow fosse and low earthen bank, except at NNE where both bank and fosse have been incorporated into a field boundary. This area may define the site of a graveyard. It contains a poorly defined rectangular platform at W which may represent the remains of a church, and two stray pieces of dressed stone lying within the enclosed area at E. Traditionally known as 'The Abbey Field' (local information)' The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).
