• CL016-078 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On top of a prominent E-W running ridge in reclaimed pasture with good views to the N and S. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘earthwork’ in the RMP (1996). A subcircular rath (dims. 36m E-W; 31m N-S) defined by an earth and stone scarp, best preserved between E (H 0.8m) and S (H c. 1.1m) but almost eroded to ground level elsewhere. At a distance of 3.3m from the S edge, a length of limestone uprights (L 4.2m; H 0.25m) may be the remains of a stone-facing; further boulders are visible around the perimeter between E and SE. • CL016-079 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a S-facing slope near the top of a hill in a clearing within a coniferous tree plantation; surrounded by hilly undrained marshy pasture. Hachured on the 1916 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A circular rath (diam. 26.5) defined by a low round-topped earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m) and external flat-bottomed waterlogged fosse (Wth 2m). Multiple cattle gaps run through the bank. A field boundary shown in the E half of the interior on the mapping has been levelled. Trees have been planted right up to the fosse between N and E. Another rath (CL016-080----) lies c. 40m to the SSE.   Description

  On a S-facing slope near the top of a hill in a clearing within a coniferous tree plantation, surrounded by hilly undrained marshy pasture. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). An almost circular rath (24m E-W; 23.5m N-S) defined by a steep-sided round-topped earthen bank (base Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.35m; max. ext. H 0.8m at N) and external fosse (Wth 2.4m; D 0.3m). A slight lowering of the bank at E is the only hint of an entrance gap (L 3m). The interior slopes to the S and is in pasture. Another rath lies c. 40m to the NNW.
