  Description

  Situated on a broad headland on the W side of Doonbeg Bay in an area of fertile pasture and tillage. The view from the site is limited, although a towerhouse named Dromore Castle (CL046-019002-) which was built on the headland can be seen from some distance away. A pier has been built immediately to the northeast of the castle. Sea rocks jutting out 40m from the headland suggest that it may have been larger at one time. Two banks and a counterscarp bank (L 40m) extending in a straight line across the W part of the headland and enclosing an area 50m x 70m were noted and photographed by Markus Casey during an aerial survey (Casey 1999, 214, Clare P4). • CL046-019002 Castle - tower house
  Description

  The MacMahons were chiefs of Dunmugyda Inver in the 13th century, but the castle is first listed in 1574 when it was owned by Sir Donal O'Brien, but was owned by MacMahons in 1599 when it was re-taken by the Earl. It was granted by the Earl to Morrogh MacGucarrick in 1617, and it may have been occupied down to 1698 when it is mentioned in letters, but was a ruin by the early 19th century. It is situated on the landward side of a small W-E promontory (dims. 22m N-S; 11m E-W) at the W side of Doonbeg Bay. Rectangular structure (ext. dims. 11m E-W; 8.3m N-S; H c. 13m) to two storeys with good quoins and traces of a base batter, but most of the outer face of the walls is gone at the base. The destroyed doorway is towards the N end of the E wall and leads through a lobby protected by a murder hole to the ground floor appartment under an E-W vault. This chamber has embrasures and double-splayed lights on the N and W walls, that on the S wall being expanded into a secondary entrance. From the lobby a destroyed mural stairs in the E wall leads to a spiral stairs at the SE angle, which is now inaccessible. This led to a chamber (int. dims. 3.2m E-W; 1.2m) with two small lights in the S wall. Steps in the E wall lead from the spiral stairs through a passage to a room over the murder hole, now largely destroyed. Beyond this room, a passage in the N wall leads W to a garderobe with two chutes. A doorway in the passage in the E wall gives access to the first floor underneath an E-W vault, but the W wall of this room is destroyed. There is a single destroyed window in the N wall and a small chamber at the W end of the N wall. All other windows are simple lights, and the spiral stairs continues to further storeys, now destroyed.   Description

  On the W side of Doonbeg Bay on the N side of a triangular headland and c. 13.6m W of Doonmore castle (CL046-019002-). A shell midden (L 1.77m; max. T 0.09m; D below surface 0.56m) comprising a compacted mixed layer of dog whelks and some limpet shells. Two other shell middens (CL046-040---- and CL046-041----) lie 7m and 13m to the W respectively. Banks in the adjacent field were noted as a possibly promontory fort (Casey 1999). Middens were noted at this location in 2008 in advance of proposed development at Doonbeg pier and the banks were interpreted as a possible bawn relating to the castle (Coyne, Darmody and O’Mahony 2008, 25-7).   Description

A shell midden (L 2.95m; T 0.12-0.22m; D below surface 0.10m) comprising a densely compacted layer of limpet shells with occasional dog whelks and oyster shells exposed in the N-facing profile. A few oyster shells are exposed c. 0.27m below the main concentration. Two other shell middens (CL046-038---- and CL046-041----) lie 6m to the E and 7m to the W respectively. Banks in the adjacent field were noted as a possibly promontory fort (Casey 1999) (CL046-019001-). Middens were noted at this location in 2008 in advance of proposed development at Doonbeg pier and the banks were interpreted as a possible bawn relating to the castle (Coyne, Darmody and O’Mahony 2008, 25-7). Further reports on the middens were furnished in 2014-15 (pers. comm. John Tracey) when it was thought they were newly exposed due to severe storms.   Description

  On the W side of Doonbeg Bay on the N side of a triangular headland c. 26m W of Doonmore castle (CL046-019002-). A shell midden (L 3.3m; T 0.05- 0.18m; D below surface 0.59m) comprising almost exclusively limpet shells at the W end and dog whelks at the E end. Immediately to the W a light scattering of dog whelks (L 2.8m; T 0.28m; D below surface 0.31m) is exposed. Two other shell middens (CL046-040---- and CL046-038----) lie 6m and 13m to the E respectively. Banks in the adjacent field were noted as a possibly promontory fort (Casey 1999) (CL046-019001-). Middens were noted at this location in 2008 in advance of proposed development at Doonbeg pier and the banks were interpreted as a possible bawn relating to the castle (Coyne, Darmody and O’Mahony 2008, 25-7).
