• CL035-031001 Children's burial ground
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope, in an area of native woodland surrounded by pasture, except to NW where there are other small pockets of woodland. This monument is situated at the western edge of the woodland boundary. The monument is depicted on all OS historic mapping as a sub-rectangular area which is named ‘Graves’ on the 1840 edition of the OS 6-inch map and ‘Children’s Burial Ground’ on the 25-inch OS map. A roughly rectangular area (10m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by a short scarp (Wth 1.5m; H 0.95m) to S and the remains of a levelled scarp (Wth 1.2m; H 0.15m) to N and E, and levelled scarp (Wth 1.2m; H 0.35m) to W. The interior has a SE-facing slope consistent with the prevailing hillslope. There are numerous moss-covered boulders and also intermittent low, upright markers most of which are E-facing. These cover the entire area of the interior and are concentrated across the western two-thirds of the burial ground. A conspicuous, flat slab (L 2.15m; Wth 0.8m; H 0.12m) located on the southern scarp at the E end, could potentially have served as a simple altar. A holy well (CL035-031002-) is located c. 34m to NE. • CL035-031002 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  On a SE-facing slope, in an area of native woodland surrounded by pasture, except to NW where there are other small pockets of woodland. This monument is situated at the eastern edge of the woodland boundary. According to Westropp (1908-09, 391), ‘There is another holy well dedicated to St Mochuille in the townland of Fertanbeg, at which stations continue to be performed.’ Depicted on all OS historic mapping and named ‘Tobermochulla’. Not visible at ground level. A very poorly drained area where various springs rise and create various pools of water lodging and run-off downslope. Poached by livestock across surface of woodland due to poorly drained nature of ground. A children’s burial ground (CL035-031001-) is located c. 34m to SW. • CL035-035 Enclosure
  Description

  On a SW facing slope, in pasture, overlooking gently undulating countryside. An oval area (31m NE-SW; 20m NW-SE) defined by the remains of a bank (int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.5m; Wth at top 0.7m; overall Wth 4.6m) N-SW which has been reduced to a scarp (Wth 2.2m; H 0.9m) SW-N. The bank is incorporated into a field boundary N-SW. Some mature and young Beech trees grow out of the bank and scarp and the tree-plate of a mature Beech is uprooted in the SE sector. A gap (Wth c. 2m) is located at SW and a second gap (Wth c. 1.8m) is situated at NE. There are traces of an outer fosse (overall Wth 3.4m; basal Wth 0.9m; D 0.15m) N-SW, which is best preserved NE-SE, in the adjoining field. The interior has a relatively steep SW-facing slope consistent with the prevailing slope. Small beech trees have self-seeded within the SW half and the NE half is generally clear. A shallow, L-shaped depression (c. 3.4m NE-SW; c. 3.5m NW-SE) is located within the NE sector and may represent a potential collapse into a souterrain passage given its angular shape in plan. • CL035-173 Fulacht fia
  Description

  At the NW corner of a fairly level field in pasture and just c. 6m E of a stream. A large grassed-over horseshoe-shaped mound (17.9m N-S) with light poaching at N revealing very compacted burnt stone and clay. The fulacht is open (3.45m NE-SW; 7.5m NW-SE) to the WSW. The bank dips for c. 6.5m at NE. Four ash trees and one hawthorn grow on the S end of the mound.
