- CL016-011003 Kiln - lime
Description
Built into a S-facing slope outside the S wall of the bawn (CL016-011002-) surrounding Caislean A’Mhagaigh tower house (CL016-011001-). A corbelled limekiln (H c. 1.2m; Wth c. 3m) constructed of undressed limestone. It may be contemporary with the adjacent poorly preserved tower house (CL016-011001-). (Breen and Ua Cróinín 1997). The following image has been uploaded: CL016-011003-_01.jpg View of limekiln from S with bawn wall behind. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 1 February 2022
- CL016-012001 Church
Description
Situated on a low natural rise in undulating limestone outcrop c. 0.5km W of Kilfenora. A small rectangular building (int. dims. 7.9m E-W; 4.3m N-S) largely collapsed. Intermittent remains of the N wall foundations are surmounted by a modern wall. A mound (H 0.25m; Wth 1.1m) of grassed-over rubble is all that remains of the E gable. The S wall (L 5.6m; H 2.25m; T 0.73m) is constructed of roughly coursed, mortared limestone with no remaining features. A mound with possible internal stone facing marks the W gable and it is also surmounted by a modern wall. A plain recumbent graveslab lies in the interior. Stone foundations outside the SW corner (L 2.25m) suggest that the building may originally have been larger. Undulations in the field immediately to the W suggest further building activity. The church may have been part of a leper hospital (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 352). Kilcarragh church is a national monument in State care, no. 7. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 20 May 2015
- CL016-012002 Graveyard
Description
On a low natural rise in undulating limestone outcrop. A single graveslab (1.71m x 0.64m) lies within Kilcarragh Church (CL016-012001-). According to Swinfen (1992, 34) this was recorded previously as being 'near the church' indicating that there may have been a graveyard here. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 20 May 2015
- CL016-015005 Cross - High cross
Description
Situated in a field c. 200m W of Kilfenora Cathedral (CL016-015002-). Listed in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996) as ‘Cross’. This is the 12th-century high cross known as the ‘West cross’. It is one of originally 6 limestone high crosses at Kilfenora, five of which are still there (see CL016-015006-, CL016-015007-, CL016-015008-, and CL016-015013- all of which are now moved into the cathedral due to weathering). The sixth (CL045-033009-) was moved to Killaloe in 1821 and stands in the cathedral there. This cross was described by Harbison (1992, 115-16) as a tall ringed cross (H 4.6m; 1.3m across the arms), unusually thin for its height (the bottom of the shaft measures 0.95m by 0.3m) with roll moulding at the edges apart from around the arms of the cross on the W face where this is replaced by rope moulding. East face: The figure of the crucified Christ dressed in a long robe dominates the head of the East face. Rope moulding and false relief interlace fill the shaft and there is a plain triangle at the base. West face: This is decorated with a series of panels of interlace. The head has a circular fretwork panel surrounded by a rope moulding and has two-strand interlace flanking it on the arms. The upper shaft is filled with interlocking pelta-shapes together with interlace forming four circular and four square devices. At the base there is a downward-pointing triangle filled with a knot of interlace. The north side is undercorated except for the end of the arm which has two sets of four-pointed knots of interlace forming a square. The south side is undecorated. This is a national monument in State care, no. 8. The following images have been uploaded: CL016-015001-_01.jpg High cross from E. CL016-015001-_02.jpg High cross from W.
