Description
On an elevated ridge, just south of the Dangan and Kilweelran townland boundary. Listed as a ‘Potential Site Air Photo’ in the RMP. A large irregularly shaped enclosure (160m E-W; 120m N-S) defined by a mound wall. Its northern half forms an arc, but its southern half follows the local topography. A modern wall is built on its line from S to W. A possible house site (CL005-060003-) lies just N of centre. A large cairn (CL005-060001-) overlooks it from c. 30m to the W. Description
On an elevated ridge of rough pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL005-104001-). A roughly circular enclosure (diam. 65m) defined by a partially grassed-over stone bank (Wth 2.2m; H 0.2-0.7m). A smaller, more recent, enclosure (diam. c. 15) is built in the SE sector and runs up onto the bank at SE. Later parallel strip field walls, orientated WSW-ENE, extend across the enclosure and a modern trackway cuts through the N sector. Description
On a steep rocky E-facing slope overlooking a small fertile valley in which lie a mound (CL006-006001-), a children’s burial ground (CL006-003001-), a ‘holy tree’ (CL006-006002-) and several enclosures (CL006-003002-, CL006-004---- and CL006-007----). Within an extensive field system (CL005-104001-) extending across Ailwee Hill. A roughly circular cairn (15m N-S; 13m E-W; max. H 2.3m at E) comprised of large and smaller stones. Description
On a steep NE-facing slope in elevated pasture just S of a col between Moneen Mountain to the N and Ailwee to the S with clear views to the E. An irregular enclosure (c. 120m NW-SE; 55m NE-SW) defined by a stone wall with internal and external vertical slab facing surviving intermittently and later drystone walling in places. Description
On level and improved pastureland. Indicated and named ‘Killeen’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. A poorly preserved rectangular enclosure (L 15.5m N–S; Wth 11.7m ext.) defined only along its E side and at the E end of its S side by a low overgrown scarp (H 0.6–0.9m). Burials are concentrated along the W side, marked by small unworked flat flags and a few small erect marker stones. The remains of an enclosure (CL006-003002-) are located c. 30m to the SSE. Description
On level improved and cleared pastureland c. 60m SE of a children’s burial ground (CL006-003001-). Hachured as a complete enclosure on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as a partial enclosure on the 1915 ed. The only potentially associated surface expression is a low arcing scarp. The OS parish namebooks for Kilweelran in 1839 (Placenames database of Ireland) list four ancient forts in the townland ‘standing in a direct line from east towards N. west about 8 chains [c. 160m] apart’. Description
On level improved pastureland. Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but not marked on the 1915 ed. However, the field boundary on the 1915 ed. does curve along the line of the NW sector. Not visible at ground level. The OS parish namebooks for Kilweelran in 1839 (Placenames database of Ireland) list four ancient forts in the townland ‘standing in a direct line from east towards N. west about 8 chains [c. 160m] apart’. - CL006-006001 Mound
Description
On a gentle S-facing downslope at the S foot of a steep rise in improved pasture. A poorly preserved circular mound (diam. at base 20.6m; max. H 1.4m) with a flat top (8.2m E–W; 1m N–S) and gently sloping sides. A drystone-walled enclosure (L 7m N–S; Wth 6m ext.) is built into the E end. It contains a concrete water tank off which two channels run. The channel to the S reveals the mound composition to include earth and small stones. The OS parish namebooks for Kilweelran in 1839 (Placenames database of Ireland) list four ancient forts in the townland ‘standing in a direct line from east towards N. west about 8 chains [c. 160m] apart’. Enclosures are located c. 150m to the S (CL006-003002-), 90m to the S (CL006-004----) and c. 130m NNE (CL006-007----). Description
In a small copse of ash trees and fenced off. Indicated and named ‘Blessed Bush’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. An old ivy-clad blackthorn tree, just S of which a spring emerges. The spring now feeds a small concrete water tank and a dry stream bed runs along the W side. A mound (CL006-006001-) is located c. 30m to the S, a children’s burial ground (CL006-003001-) c. 180m to the SSW and an enclosure (CL006-007----) c. 100m to the NNE. Description
On a moderately steep S-facing downslope in improved and extensively cleared pastureland. A circular enclosure, not marked on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but hachured on the 1915 ed. Not visible at ground level. A potential scarp visible on OS orthophotography (2013–18) extending in an arc from E to SW may represent the southern limit of the monument.
