  Description

  Situated within a graveyard (CL025-070002-) beside the RC church in Ruan village in a flat area with Port Hill rising to the S. The ruins of a late 15th-century church (int. dims. 17m E-W; 6m N-S; wall T 1m), known as Templemaraha, constructed of well-coursed limestone blocks with dressed quoins. All the church walls are base battered. A pointed doorway (Wth 1.15m; H 1.68m) in the S wall has a hanging eye on the W side and there is a damaged window embrasure towards the E end of the S wall. The E gable has a two-light ogee-headed window missing its central mullion and an aumbry almost at present ground level. Most of the N wall is reduced to a foundation course. A small chapel (int. dims. 8.55m N-S; 5.9m E-W) with much poorer stonework abuts the W end of the church to the S and obscures some of the stonework of the church doorway. There is a doorway (Wth 0.87m) in the E wall of the chapel and a gable in the S wall which has a slit window in a lintelled embrasure. Against the N wall of the chapel is a wall monument to Donogh O’Kerine dating to 1688 (CL025-070003-). Several possible 17th-century graveslabs (CL025-070004- and CL025-070007- to CL025-070019-), some with incised ringed crosses and some with plain crosses in high relief are lying recumbent within the church and another (CL025-070020-) lies within the graveyard. A large mausoleum built for the O’Loghlen family of north Clare lies to the N of the church. Ruan church is a national monument in State care, no. 17.   The graveyard at Ruan church (CL025-070001-) is pentagonal in shape (c. 100m N-S; max. 62m E-W), defined by a masonry wall (H 1-1.4m). It is well cared for and extended to the W. It contains many 19th and 20th century graves and a mausoleum to the N of the church built for the O’Loghlen family of north Clare.   Situated against the N wall of a small chapel abutting the S wall of Ruan church (CL025-070001-). A chest tomb comprising large limestone blocks over which is a plaque with an inscription in Roman capitals that reads first in English ‘This chapel and tomb were erected by Donogh O’Kerine, the son of Dermot O’Kerine of Owan, for him and his posterities use in the year of our Lord God 1688’ and then in Latin 'Enmors ante fores mu/ndi! si queris honores, cri/mina deplores. Pro me te/ deprecor ores' which translates as 'Behold Death standing in front of the portals of the World! If you seek honours, repent your crimes. I entreat you to pray for me.'   Description

  Set in gravel in the middle of the nave of Ruan church (CL025-070001-). A tapering graveslab (L 1.46m; Wth at top 0.48m; Wth at base 0.38m) lying flush with the gravel with its head to W. The slab is much weathered but a simple incised double-lined ringed cross can just be made out. The lower end cannot be distinguished. The edges are rough and broken and the lower left chunk is broken off. A similar but more well-preserved slab (CL025-070007-) lies immediately to N. CL025-070004-_01.jpg attached.   Lying within Ruan graveyard (CL025-070002-) c. 3.5m W of the W wall of the church (CL025-070001-). The remains of a chest tomb, much broken and missing one of its side stones and its top slab.   Set in gravel in the middle of the nave of Ruan church (CL025-070001-). A tapering slab (max. L 1.33m; Wth at top 0.44m; Wth at base 0.4m; min. D 0.6m but laid unevenly in gravel). Aligned E-W with the head to W. Broken across the middle with the two portions now 0.03m apart. A simple incised double-lined ringed cross occupies the main portion of the slab ending in a base with upturned steps 0.35m from the end of the slab. The ring of the cross occupies the entire head right to the edges. The base is rough and broken. A much worn slab (CL025-070004-) with traces of a similar cross lies immediately adjacent to S.   A large recumbent graveslab lying in gravel in Ruan Church (CL025-070002-). A tapering slab (L 1.77m; Wth at top 0.65m; Wth at base 0.49m; D 0.7m) with a double-lined incised cross ending in a flat base (the shaft continues below the horizontal line). Aligned E-W with the head to W. No sign of an inscription. As with similar crosses in the church the ringed head occupies the entire head of the slab.   Set upright in the W half of Ruan church (CL025-070002-) facing E and leaning slightly to NE. A limestone slab (H 0.71m; Wth at top 0.42m; Wth at base 0.37m; D 0.17m) with a double-lined incised ringed cross at the head. There is no evidence of an incised shaft below the ringed head. The slab was reused as a gravemarker and is likely not complete. The name Patrick O'Hendrick has been incised and superimposed on the ringed head.   Description

  On the N shore of Dromore lake. Hachured on the 1920 OS 6-inch map. Described by Ua Cróinín and Breen (1996) as a mound of earth and rubble about 3m high on which Portlecka Castle (CL025-075002-) was built. The cairn or mound (40m E-W; 27m N-S; H 2-2.5m over the water level) has traces of kerbstones around the base, just above the water level and may have been a crannog. Only portion of the S wall of the castle remains. The island is now attached to the mainland. A small harbour to the S was built in similar cairn material.   Description

  Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Published as a ‘fort’ in a note (Coffey 1987, 49) and described as lying between Port House and the gateway to the disused kitchen garden. On inspection in 1999 this was found to be a sunken rectangular area (max. 22.7m N-S; 21m E-W) and is most likely related to the gardens of Port House. Tomb of Sir Michael O'Loghlen, the first Catholic to be apponted Master of the Rolls.

  Freestanding single-bay single-storey mausoleum with memorial above, dated 1882. Cut-limestone walls with moulded cornice and shouldered door opening having cast-iron door. Memorial comprising square-profile base with stepped buttresses, pinnacles and inset plaques, having octagonal-profile shaft and conical cap above. Cut-stone piers and walls to site with cast-iron gates and railings.
