• CL026-044 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  On the S and E-facing slopes of a hillock. Hachured on the 1840 and 1920 OS 6-inch maps. A subcircular area (int. diam. 26m N-S; 23m E-W) defined by a broad scrub-covered stone spread (Wth 6.5-9m; int. H 0.5-0.8m; ext. H 0.4-0.8m S-W to 1.2-1.4m N-E). Original inner facing (H 0.4m) survives at N and S. There is a cattle gap (Wth 1.4m) at ESE, but the original entrance is not evident. • CL026-045 Enclosure
  Description

  On the E-facing slope of a hillock. Hachured as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1840 OS 6-inch map abutting the townland boundary with Ballymaconna at NE. An oval grass-covered area (dims. 34m E-W; 20m N-S) defined by a slight scarp (H 0.5m) and with a small area of rock outcrop H 0.5m) visible in the E sector. • CL026-188 Pit-burial
  Description

  This record is for a pit-burial, excavated in 2002 as part of the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West project (Licence no. 02E1153). Situated on a SE-facing slope near a hilltop with good views in all directions except NW. A single bowl-shaped cremation pit was excavated (diam. 0.34m; D 0.19m). The pit fill was a grey/brown fine silt with very occasional small stone inclusions (diam. typically 0.05m). Cremated bone was present as a discrete deposit near the base of the pit. Some charcoal flecking was also recorded. The excavated feature most probably represents a human burial of perhaps Bronze Age date. The discrete placement of the cremated bone suggests that it may have been held in a small container such as a bag. Some effort had then seemingly been made to mask the burial with old subsoil.
