Description
Situated on the S-facing slope of a small promontory projecting W into the sea, c. 35m from the foreshore. Indicated and named ‘Gortagreenan fort’ on the 1842 and 1915 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Named ‘Gort an Ghrianáin’ on Robinson’s map (1977) and recorded as ‘Gortagreenaun fort’ by Westropp (1911, 353). A poorly preserved oval cashel (int. dims. 35.6m E–W from face of wall at W to crest of stone spread at E; 30m N–S face to face) defined by a low grassed-over stony spread (Wth 2.6m) with sporadic inner and outer facing-stones. At SE two large boulders on the line of the enclosure may mark an entrance (Wth 1.8m). It is overlain NW–SSW by a later field wall. - CL002-020 Enclosure
Description
On a gentle SW-facing downslope just above the shoreline with rock outcrop immediately S and E and pasture to N, at the crossing point to Scanlon’s Island. Hachured on the 1842 OS 6-inch map as a circular feature (diam. c. 18m) and listed in the RMP (1996) as ‘Enclosure’. On inspection in 1997 there were no visible remains. The 1842 edition overlaid on Digital Globe (2011-2013) suggests some portion of a bank may remain. There is a rath (CL002-068001-) c. 200m NW and a cashel (CL002-019001-) c. 500m SSW on Scanlon’s Island. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Ros Ó Maoldúin Date of upload: 2 December 2020

Description
In good-quality meadowland on a gentle W-facing slope, c. 100m SE of Lough Murree. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A poorly preserved circular rath, reduced to a scarped platform (int. dims. 19.7m E–W; 18.7m N–S crest to crest), defined by a low scarp (H 0.6–1.3m rising over 1–3.4m), overlain by a later field wall at E. A two-chambered souterrain (CL002-068002-) is in its NW sector. Stones projecting from the N scarp are likely to be part of the souterrain. - CL002-068002 Souterrain
Description
In a poorly preserved rath (CL002-068001-), in good-quality meadowland, on a gentle W-facing slope c. 100m SE of Lough Murree. A drystone-built souterrain comprising two chambers, one N and the other S, connected by a narrow passage, forming a H-shaped plan. The passage (L 1.2m; Wth 1m) has its roofstone removed and gives access through a lintelled ope (Wth 0.7m; H 1.4m) to the mid-section of N chamber. The N chamber (L 4.6m E–W; Wth 1.8–2m) is subrectangular with slightly rounded ends (Wth 1m). It is capped by massive roof lintels between which some very wide joints are cross-lintelled by smaller flags. The clay floor is visible only at the W end, where the height from floor to roof is 1.6m. The E and W gable ends have small niches. The E one (0.4 x 0.4m) is at floor level and the W one (L 0.6m; H 0.4m) is 0.4m above present floor level. Two air vents occur on the N wall just below the top of the inwardly projecting corbelling course carrying the roof lintels, one mid-way along the wall (0.4 x 0.25m) and the other (0.3m x 0.18m) near the E end. The S chamber is not accessible, but a small hole allows limited visual inspection. It appears to be of similar construction, orientation, and size to the N chamber. - CL002-070 Martello tower
Description
Listed as ‘Martello tower’ in the RMP (1996). Situated on Finnavarra Point at the W end of a long narrow peninsula projecting W into Ballyvaughan Bay and built during the Napoleonic Wars (1812-16). A fine squat ovoid tower (diam. c. 17m; H c. 10m) of finely dressed large rectangular limestone blocks standing on a double plinth and tapering inwards gently towards the top of the tower. A rectangular doorway faces E 3.7m above ground level. It has a sloping sillstone to accommodate a ladder, the stone foot-plate of which lies embedded in the ground 3.2m E of the tower. A small circular opening in the lintel of the door may have acted as a murder-hole. According to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage there is a cutstone limestone flat roof with three gun placements at parapet level and a brick vaulted interior roof structure. A roofless and partly robbed-out stone building (L 9.7m N-S; Wth 4.2m; wall T 0.6m) stands 4.5m to ENE. It contains robbed out fireplaces and flues in the N and S gables and some red brick in the walls.
