  Description

  In a housing estate, on a steep W-facing slope. Described in 1999 as a kidney-shaped mound (18m E-W; 15m N-S) of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil in a ploughed field just E of a country house named 'The Hermitage' on the 1934 OS 6-inch map; yellow soil noted on the S side of the mound may have marked the location of the hearth (SMR file). There are no visible remains of this possible fulacht fia. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Pitched slate roofs with overhanging eaves, decorative timber bargeboards and timber finial to gables. Red brick chimneystacks. Rubble limestone walls with red brick quoins. Rendered wall to south. Camber-headed openings with red brick block-and-start surrounds and voussoirs and replacement timber windows. Camber-headed openings to north and south elevations, with red brick voussoirs and block-and-start surrounds, some blind, some with replacement windows. Segmental-arched opening to front elevation with red brick block-and-start surround, timber panelled half-glazed door and fanlight. Rubble stone boundary walls with cut limestone square-profile piers to entrance.

Render cornices to bay windows. Red brick walls with rendered walls to basement level. Red brick and render plinth course. Red brick and brown brick string courses. Slightly pointed square-headed openings with red brick voussoirs and label mouldings and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, some bipartite. Three-centred-arch door opening with timber panelled half-glazed door, decorative stepped red brick surround, approached by flight of cut limestone steps. Three-centred-arched door opening with moulded brick stepped surround, timber panelled door and cut limestone step. Canopy comprising pitched slate roof with cast-iron ridge crestings and decorative carved timber bargeboard and finial, supported by circular-profile rope moulded columns with decorative caps and brackets.
